Most Visual Basic .NET books are written for experienced object-oriented programmers, but many programmers jumping on the .NET bandwagon are coming from non-object-oriented languages, such as Visual Basic 6.0 or from script programming, such as JavaScript. These programmers, and those who are adopting VB.NET as their first programming language, have been out of luck when it comes to finding a high-quality introduction to the language that helps them get started. That's why Jesse Liberty, author of the best-selling books Programming C# and Programming ASP.NET , has written an entry-level guide to Visual Basic .NET. Written in a warm and friendly manner, this book assumes no prior programming experience, and provides an easy introduction to Microsoft's most popular .NET language. Learning Visual Basic .NET is a complete introduction to VB.NET and object-oriented programming. This book will help you build a solid foundation in .NET, and show how to apply your skills by using hundreds of examples to help you become productive quickly. Learning Visual Basic .NET introduces fundamentals like Visual Studio .NET, a tool set for building Windows and Web applications. You'll learn about the syntax and structure of the Visual Basic .NET language, including operators, classes and interfaces, structs, arrays, and strings. Liberty then demonstrates how to develop various kinds of applications--including those that work with databases--and web services. By the time you've finished Learning Visual Basic .NET , you'll be ready to move on to a more advanced programming guide that will help you create large-scale web and Windows applications. Whether you have a little object-oriented programming experience or you are new to programming altogether, Visual Basic .NET will set you firmly on your way to mastering the essentials of the VB.NET language. Review: Experiences in learning VB.NET - Over the past decade I have been required to complete small amounts of code writing in VB6 and Python to augment my engineering work. In my opinion VB6 and Python coding can be successfully completed with little or no understanding of Object Oriented Programming (OOP). However this is much less true of VB.NET which I consider to be one of its great attributes as it forces you to fully embrace OOP and in doing so elevates your code to a new level of clarity and efficiency. I would like to thoroughly recommend this little book due to its well chosen words and examples that helped me to become more proficient at OOP in VB.NET. Review: Son is satisfied - I bought this for my son to read over the summer in preparation for a class he’s taking next semester. He said he was satisfied with the book and has a good understanding of the material.

Great intro to vb.net and Object Oriented Programming in general
Really enjoyed reading this booked. I've messed around with programming for awhile, but this book really helped me understand class based programming. Great book, really well structured.

Excellent book!
A very well written book. I started VB .Net from scratch and I was able to write some complex programs after reading this book.

For a beginner programmer
I ordered this book to start learning Visual Basic .Net, but instead it spends the first half the book teaching me 'how to program', THEN it 'teaches me Visual Basic .Net'. I already know how to program, so the first half of this book is wasted on me. For exmaple, Chapter 6 talks about 'If' statements, 'Do While' loops, etc. Chapter 7 talks about operators (i.e. +, -, =). If you have very little programming experience and want to learn Visual Basic .Net, then get this book. If you know 'If' statements, 'Do While' loops, and Operators, then don't get this book.

Great for knowledgeable users looking to add to there skillset
I'd give this a higher rating of not for the lack of update to vs.net 2017. Otherwise, I haven't worked with any coding for over 15 years. I need to build interfaces between different systems to help reduce errors and productivity losses. This was a great refresher for object orientation and an introduction to .net and vs.net.

Love O'Reilly books
Have a library of these programming books, would not resort to buying any other kind. I buy one of these every time i have to learn a new language.

Excellent
Shipping and delivery time were no issue. As for the contents of the book, these guys make many books for all languages and they are the gold standard. Obviously Visual Basic is not common but if you need to learn, this is the book.

The Book
I found the book is useful as a point of reference only. It is not an easy read. But the information is in there somewhere if you can find it.
