As for the case with candles that were burning out in only 4 days: These are made without a wick, a hole is molded or drilled - and a wick is threaded through the hole. The first case of candles lasted easily 7 days and often 8. So far, these last 4.5 days. This new case arrived last week as we were on our last candle from the old case and the first one was lit on Tuesday night. At bedtime Saturday night the candle had burned to the point we were not sure it would last until morning. Another candle was lit to replace it, and sure enough by morning, the first candle was out. Maybe 4.5 days. The first batch had a smallish flame and left unburned wax residue on the side of the container, yet lasted over 7 days as stated. This first candle from the new batch has a stronger flame, there was zero wax residue on the container at the end, but of some additional concern is the plastic at the top of the container is blackened, presumably from the extra heat. Clearly, something has been changed in the formula between the cases of candles, a slightly larger wick perhaps? But at $95 a case, the result is that compared to the previous case, these last 60% fewer hours which means that in practical terms, the real cost in hours is $158 per case! The second candle from this case appears to be burning just as hot and at the same accelerated pace. Lastly, regarding the plastic containers... We had not been trimming the wicks short before lighting the candles (for the first time) on the first case we bought. All went well until one candle's wick bent over and formed an arch without breaking off. The arch created a very high flame that went unnoticed until we smelled burning plastic. When we figured out it was coming from the candle, we saw that the lip of the container had completely melted inwards and was black. After cooling off, we trimmed the wick, relit the candle, and had no further problems. We keep the candles inside a lantern with an additional low container to "catch" any wax/plastic in case there is an unnoticed complete meltdown and fire. We were safe, but without those precautions there may have been a much bigger problem. Anyone know where I can find those?** A: you can buy all of my empty ones **Q: Does the wax completely burn down to the bottom of the container and not just through the center of the candle?** A: There is some wax residue that remains on the inside of the plastic candle case but we haven't found that to be all that distressing considering the positives. The candles do burn down to the bottom. The fact that these candles frequently do better than the 7 days is very much appreciated. And while the plastic is not glass, it is embossed with large about 3" high crosses around the upper third, Nativity scenes on the middle third, and smaller maybe 1" high crosses in a ring around the holder towards the bottom. Would we prefer that these were glass - sure but those would cost more for the candle plus shipping. And do we wish none of the wax remained on the walls, sure again. But the only ones we have found like that only lasted 5 days (barely) and the few we have tried that were both glass and supposedly would last 7 days were at least 3X more expansive. Our budget simply can't afford it. If I had that 'extra' cash I'd more than likely buy more food for the baskets our Knights of Columbus give out this time of the year to those who need a bit of help. Also this year we 'adopted' an elderly veteran (not quite yet in Hospice but all too soon). He has no family left and has Parkinson's. The social worker we know who does work for Hospice as a coordinator, got us the veteran's Christmas wish list and we filled it as best we could. And we're getting some badly needed hygiene supplies for another dozen or so elderly in similar situations. Soap, shampoo, skin moisturizer, some warm socks, etc. Personally I think that's a much better use of any extra cash we can put together. I'm sure there are those in your neighborhood who could use a little Christmas cheer. Something for you to consider. We do have a small Advent ring on the center of our dining table and have the 7 day candle in the middle. It's very pretty. I didn't think I would like the plastic sleeves but they work well, do not smell bad and don't melt or in any way seem unsuitable and having a much lighter candle is great. These candles burn clean - rarely any blackening of the plastic sleeve. There is no odor - or at least extremely little odor associated with them. They do, indeed, burn for seven full days (if not a wee bit longer).
