Review: Best Pastel Support for Beginners - As a pastelist with less than one year of experience, I can say with no reservations whatsoever that Uart is one of the best pastel papers for beginners. Period. At the beginning of my painting journey, I started out using unsanded papers. Instead of layering color in complex or beautiful ways, I "made mud" on those unsanded papers. Uart has a sanded surface similar to sandpaper. It holds many layers of color, even more than you could hope for if you use a spray fixative on the first few layers. I am a very heavy-handed painter, something I'm trying to correct, but even I can get 8 or 9 layers of color on Uart. In my book, that's a wonderful pastel support! Uart can handle any kind of underpainting you wish to use. Watercolor, oil stains, alcohol washes etc. can all be used on it without harming the paper. The biggest downside to using Uart is that it does indeed curl. I frame most of my work so it isn't a big deal to me. Some people think the surface is hard on the fingertips while painting on it. I'd be wary of aggressive finger blending on it, but I've had no trouble otherwise. Uart comes in several different grits. I really enjoy 400 which is mid-range. It is a pleasure to work on, and the nice results mean I want to paint more often. Highly recommended!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is a good less expensive beginner sanded paper?  I've never used sanded paper before and don't want to mess up on expensive sanded paper.**
A: The uart 400 grade paper was recommended to me by two different teachers. I found it good to use. It holds the pastel well. I did buy the 600 grade which was cheaper but was not so pleased with it. I have painted with oils and watercolors and had thought that pastels were not for me but now I really like them. Have fun, they are more forgiving than watercolors and you can achieve a amazing amount of detail with them.

**Q: How does this paper differ from Pastelmat? Or is there a difference?**
A: UArt paper has a “sandpaper” feel and comes in different grades. 400 mid grade favored by most pastel artists I know.  The paper does curl a little but usually not a problem. Accepts many layers. Pastelmat is much smoother and has a firmer backing but it also holds a lot of pastel. I use both. If using pan pastels Pastelmat good choice since not abrasive to the applicators. Recommend watching YouTube videos that compare the papers.

**Q: How does this differ from ordinary sandpaper? Other than price?**
A: The sanded surface is much finer.  Ordinary sandpaper would devour a stick of pastel chalk.  I tried it once and was not pleased with the outcome.
Professional sanded pastel paper is worth the price.

**Q: Where is this made?**

This is the best professional sanded paper to use with Nupastel firm pastels or soft pastels. It really grips the color and is heavy enough to allow an alcohol wash to be used.
