Exhausted from his labours, a man chopping down a great kapok tree in the Brazilian rain forest puts down his axe, and, as he sleeps, the animals who live in the tree plead with him not to destroy their world. The author and artist Lynne Cherry journeyed deep into the rain forests of Brazil to write and illustrate her gorgeous picture book The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the desertcart Rain Forest (1990). One day, a man exhausts himself trying to chop down a giant kapok tree. While he sleeps, the forest's residents, including a child from the Yanomamo tribe, whisper in his ear about the importance of trees and how "all living things depend on one another"... and it works. Cherry's lovingly rendered coloured pencil and watercolour drawings of all the "wondrous and rare animals" evoke the lush rain forests, as well as stunning world maps bordered by tree porcupines, emerald tree boas, and dozens more fascinating creatures. AGES: 4 to 7 AUTHOR Lynne Cherry has devoted her life to sharing her concern about environmental issues with others. Her important children's books also include The Armadillo from Amarillo and two tales from the desertcart rain forest: The Great Kapok Tree and The Shaman's Apprentice. Thought-provoking story, with beautiful illustrations.
I have used this as a read aloud in class, and also reading with a small class. It is such a wonderful book that I just bought a copy for my niece. I was reminded of it when her father said she wants to be “canopy scientist” when she grows up.

A wonderful book , beautifully illustrated
My children absolutely adore this book. We live a very healthy, conscious lifestyle and this books is ideal to accompany our lifestyle - it answers many questions as to why we do or not do certain things and makes children aware, without shocking them, about what is going on and that we have to take care of nature!
