When it does, Sometimes you can clean it cooled down, but other times it needs to be hot. Take it apart and look at all the parts. You will see where it’s clogged. One place that’s hard to see is the filter. I found, when the filter is clogged, you can peel a layer off and still use it a couple times. It saves having to replace it as much. Once I had the filter clogged and tried using it. The solder got past the heating element but not out of the way to clog it. I had a real hard time poking it out. The solder was cold though the heat was on. That’s how I learned to keep that filter clear. **Q: Which nozzle does this come with?** A: The kit came with an N61-08 which is a 1.0mm (hole) diameter tip. I recently replaced several damaged through-hole USB ports on a laptop motherboard, and this tool made a job that would have been extremely difficult with a soldering iron and desoldering braid completely manageable.When I first opened it it had no hole in the end. Then I realized that HAKKO tests them before the get packaged up. Just turn it on and it heats up faster than they say. Pull the trigger and there is the hole.The FR-301 heats quickly, has excellent suction, and removes solder cleanly from plated through-holes. Several of the USB-port mounting tabs were connected to large ground planes and required a lot of heat, but the FR-301 handled them beautifully. Once I developed a rhythm—making sure the solder was fully molten before pulling the trigger—it cleared the holes remarkably well and allowed me to remove the ports without damaging the motherboard.It is comfortable to use, easy to control, and much more capable than the inexpensive manual pumps and basic desoldering tools I have used previously. Cleaning it afterward was also straightforward, and the included tools make routine maintenance simple.Most importantly, the repair was a complete success: the laptop went back together with no damage to the board, and every replacement USB port works perfectly.The FR-301 is not inexpensive, but after using it on a real board-level repair, I can confidently say it was worth every penny. It performed exactly as I had hoped—and honestly, even better. If you regularly repair electronics or need to remove through-hole components without destroying the board, this is the tool to buy. I recently got into restoring vintage audio equipment. I started off using the manual copper wick or "solder sucker" tools, which were fine for one or two components, but are just punishing to use when trying to desolder 30 or more components in a single unit. Based on the good reviews, I sprang for the Hakko and I'm so glad I did. It's easy to use, easy to clean, basically foolproof. It's a HUGE time saver and gives a much better result than the manual methods I mentioned.The included tip has been fine for almost all of the normal capacitors, transistors, etc. that I need to remove, but sometimes thicker pins (like jumper pins) won't fit in the tip. The accessory tips are stupidly expensive, so I haven't bought those, instead using the tip I have to sort of melt and vacuum around the solder joint rather than on top of it. It still works to get about 90% of the solder cleaned up, and the wick or manual pump in conjunction with a soldering iron can take care of the rest.My only gripe is that the metal stand is a bit chintzy and the natural coil tension of its thick power cord can sort of push it around quite easily.Not a product complaint, but a safety tip: it's easy to forget that this thing is on.
