how does it signify gold plating?

The tester will light up not gold for most gold plated pieces. If it is heavily plated it could show up as a certain karat gold. You can use a file to cut a slot and then test again. It will then show it is either gold or not gold.It will not test titanium, but titanium is very light weight. There is a manual that comes with the tester. There is a ET18 Owner's Manual online.

how does it show gold plating?

If you would like to know how to tell the difference if plated gold or not you'll have to use a file and file in a place the aint that noticeable if it is something that you dont want ruinant and a very small file of course and then apply the acid to text on the file spot the gold tester Et18 RS Mizar are meant for testing real gold not plated so if when you file the item and it is testing real then it probably is oh ya and if your testing scrap gold you can file just anywhere on it because what difference is it going to make on the scrap when you test it none because it wont matter it is getting recycled any how

does it come with acid, battery and everything to start right away

Yes it does come with Acid, for the battery I believe so. It works well, but you will to be careful of two things: First the indication it above 10K or 14K or 18K, often when the Jewelry is made it rounded up Ex.. 13.55 to 14k (plumb) the machine will indicate 10K or the lower level.Second Chains or linked are not easy to test, and often a heavy plated item will past as positive.

Is the strictly electronic testing, or do you use acid also?

You use acid3 drop with 1 drop activator and electronics to test carats of gold, 10 thru 24. Works great!

Description

For slightly more than the cost of a test acid kit, the ET-18 precisely determines gold karat values equal to or greater than 10K, 14K, and 18K. Pocket sized and battery operated. Features: Distinguishes gold plate from solid gold Also tests green and pink gold Tests in two seconds Low battery indicator Runs on one 9v battery Review: DO NOT TRUST THIS PRODUCT - Customer service is the worst Tester doesn’t go any higher than 10 karat, even if the product is higher than 10 karat I reached out to the company all they seemed to care about was a restocking fee. Why would you restock a defective product? I just wanted a product that worked I didn’t ask for my money back I know for a fact I have 18 and 22 karat personal items because I had the made specially for me So I tried them out as a tester & it said 10 karat. So the fact that they’re willing to put a defective product back on the shelf explains why I have a defective product. That’s what they do. They resell defective products. Review: This is a great tester. - This tester is so easy to use. I just love it. Whish there was a silver tester that would do the same thing as this.

Good but not confident with results

It changes and not consistant with the findings. Happy enough to keep it and for the money worth the price

Easy but not reliable

I just received the Mizar gold tester. It is easy to use but tests all gold at 10K when I know it is 14K or 18K. Now, I guess I'm stuck with it because the box says it's not returnable after being used. I deal in estate jewelry and this tester is of no value to me.

works but

I wanted this for shows and to test gold at auctions and yard sales. Issue is you have to add chemicals to it to get it to work and if precious metals, the seller certainly does not want me to attach an alligator clip to their item to test it. So doing a test where I just want to see results is not happening especially when I have to pull out two bottles of chemicals to mix together to make it work. Setting it up in front of the person who I don't want to know they are actually selling me gold instead of a trinket like they presently think, is not a plus. They see its gold and the price goes up. Just to difficult to hide or do discreetly and not letting them see whether gold or not is not a plus. If just using at home, a great item.

SUPER EASY

Works well and super easy. Bought the scratch pad and tester drops at the same time. This is way better and easier to use... threw the others out.

Doesn't work and can't return!

warning: box says not returnable after using. I tried it and it is terrible. Gives false readings. Says everything is either not gold or 10K gold It even says stuff is 10K gold when I know for a fact that it is just metal. WASTE OF MONEY Seriously. Do not buy this.
