Hardest part is getting the old one out of the transmission without damaging anything in the process but like others have said, if you can find a way to lock the old rod into the piece that goes into the transmission, you can reaaaalllly push and pull on it with a lot of force that simply goes forward and backwards, which won't damage anything because the force aligns with the parts and it pulls that piece out pretty easy. The piece that connects to the transmission has channels on the inside of it that the axle rod fits into. what you do is put the axle rod in to those channels and then block the channels off with channel locks or vice grip so the rod can't slide out and then, when you pull the rod it hits the vice grips forcing the unit forward. Oh and if you take a long time to fix the issue, the alignment gets worse and worse because the spring doesn't have any force going against it so it stretches out more and more over time.
