A: Yes, it will work in Z840 or any PC with one available x8 PCIe slot.

A: Yes. I configured a system with this controller and 4x Samsung PM863 3.84tb SSD on raid 0 and it works very well. I recommend using LSI megaraid storage manager to configure the raid rather than the BIOS if possible. It has a GUIand is easier to use.

A: Firmware allows independent parameters per volume, RAID type, stripe size, cache configuration, etc.  I do strongly caution against mixing drive types; use either all SAS or all SATA.
