## Overview

This volume compiles Pierre Bourdieu’s previously unpublished lectures from the Collège de France, offering a profound sociological analysis of Édouard Manet’s role in revolutionizing the art world. It bridges art history and sociology to explain how Manet’s work challenged traditional academicism and shaped modern aesthetic perception, making it a must-read for scholars, art lovers, and cultural professionals seeking to understand the dynamics of artistic innovation.

## Description

What is a 'symbolic revolution'? What happens when a symbolic revolutions occurs, how can it succeed and prevail and why is it so difficult to understand? Using the exemplary case of Édouard Manet, Pierre Bourdieu began to ponder these questions as early as the 1980s, before making it the focus of his lectures in his last years at the Collége de France. This second volume of Bourdieu's previously unpublished lectures provides his most sustained contribution to the sociology of art and the analysis of cultural fields. It is also a major contribution to our understanding of impressionism and the works of Manet. Bourdieu treats the paintings of Manet as so many challenges to the conservative academicism of the pompier painters, the populism of the Realists, the commercial eclecticism of genre painting, and even the 'Impressionists', showing that such a revolution is inseparable from the conditions that allow fields of cultural production to emerge. At a time when the Academy was in crisis and when the increase in the number of painters challenged the role of the state in defining artistic value, the break that Manet inaugurated revolutionised the aesthetic order. The new vision of the world that emerged from this upheaval still shapes our categories of perception and judgement today - the very categories that we use everday to understand the representations of the world and the world itself. This major work by one of the greatest sociologists of the last 50 years will be of great interest to students and scholars in sociology, art history and the social sciences and humanities generally. It will also appeal to a wide readership interested in art, in impressionism and in the works of Manet.

Review: Manet: the portrait of a modernist - In 'A bar a the Folies-Berger", a stunning painting and one of the most important paintings by Manet the woman depicted in the central scene, at the bar, is looking at us or through us? Is she bored or is she tired. This and other thousand questions that perhaps not every art-viewer think or ask him/herself. This is a complete and wonderful book about Manet's life and his marvelous paintings. Every chapter is a lecture by Pierre Bordieu. Highly recommended for every art lover!
Review: Thorough and not for easy-reading - This book on symbolic revolution consists of 18 lectures that Pierre Bordieu gave at the College de France (one of the most prestigious research institutes in France) in 1999 and 2000. The topic is abstract and difficult to grasp but each lecture is divided into manageable chunks with a very logical structure. The focal point that Bordieu keeps referring back to in his efforts to explain various ideas on symbolism and revolution in art is Edouard Manet painting "Luncheon on the Grass". All in all, it is not an easy read. However, if you are interested in impressionism, sociology, art history or Manet - by all means, this book will be a treat.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Long drawn out ideas and arguments surrounding a centre of beautiful illustrations.
*by J***K on 21 December 2017*

A series of lecture notes based upon the works of Manet rather than a critical review of his work. As a non-academic I found the book slow and stodgy. Mainly because the author takes so long to express his opinions and goes to the extreme length to cover one basic theory. My other criticism is the long, drawn out translations but; the central content of colourful, wonderful art was well worth the wait. If you can get through the long drawn out chapters there are some good ideas here. Unfortunately I wasn't drawn into the theories or the arguments.
