Then the company decided to do something with it and employed Henry Cooper the boxer to do adverts on TV splash it on all over how uncouth they called it brut 33 and put it in a plastic bottle instead of a nice glass bottle. It only had 33% of the perfume compared with the original but it was cheap even Wilko sold it and did up until it went bankrupt so it became a bargain basement cheap product for the masses instead of an expensive niche product. This new version in a different bottle it's glass again not plastic I think is very close to much older formulations. They say you get what you pay for well you get a lot more than what you've paid for with this product it is truly astonishing. The fragrance is old school barbers shop style called fougere which is French for fern but ferns don't smell the surrounding area where they grow may have a damp smell but that's all. I don't know how to describe the smell of Brut and when it first came out it was like nothing else, it was unique. There is a modern fragrance that smells very much like it and it is also worn by the current King and it's called penhaligon's sartorial it's very expensive and smells remarkably similar. I think one expression is punches well above its weight. If you want fragrances as a man on the cheap apart from this you could try Old Spice, tabac and Clubman. Does it smell like Special Reserve?** A: So, I was a Brut user in the 60s and 70s. This particular fragrance (to me) is the least like the original Brut. I won't be buying it again. The Brut special reserve in the bottle that looks like the original bottle is more like the fragrance I remember. That is the one I will be buying next time (I've had it before). So, in a nutshell, this one does not smell the same as the Special Reserve - and as it says on the box - it is an "aeu de toilette" - and not the cologne or after shave. Hope this helps.
