IXUS 285 HS Compact camera, 20.2 MP - Black

Bought for my lady and she loves it, handy and easy to use (much better than a fiddly smartphone). Picture quality is very good and it is so small and can be slipped in a pocket or handbag. quick-on-the-draw 'pull it out' and quick snap, leaves me in second place, with my more expensive camera. Maybe my photos are slightly better quality, but you would have to examine very closely to see the difference. it doesn't overdo the complexities which other cameras 'suffer' from, has plenty versatility, but you don't need all that fancy stuff, this camera cover most of your needs to take a good photo

The camera was delivered by Royal Mail in a plastic bag giving details of how to claim compensation. It was in a real mess. The cardboard box was badly damaged and soaking wet. Inside the actual Canon box was damaged and everything was wet. Clearly Royal Mail were at fault here, but the camera should have been better packaged. Just putting it unprotected in a cardboard box may be fine for robust low value items, but expensive electronic equipment requires better care. Happily, the camera itself survived in some bubble wrap and appears undamaged, and despite the bad start I'm very pleased with it. It appears well made, and the optical zoom is very impressive. Only negative for me is the lack of view finder which makes it more 'point and hope' at times than 'point and shoot', but on a camera this size I expect there has to be compromises.

This small, slim camera is a good choice if you don't want a smartphone because you are happy with an older style mobile phone. The IXUS 285 is well built (I have the purple one, which has a metal body so I don't know if the other models use plastic) and very easy to use. It comes without its connecting cable but you might already have one from one of your other gadgets and I think they are still easy to obtain - USB to mini-B, often supplied with USB hard drives for computers. You can of course remove the SD card and plug it into your computer, perhaps with the aid of an SD card reader. It has wireless communication abilities but I don't find a need for those. Battery life isn't brilliant but is far better than the battery life of a smartphone. The battery takes about two and a half hours to charge and this is done by removing the battery from the camera and placing it in the charger (supplied). The camera doesn't come with an SD card but they are very cheap nowadays, especially from Amazon, so get a couple of high-capacity ones. The photos display better on a computer than on the camera's own screen, and that screen could be scratched quite easily so get yourself a case for the camera. As with all compact cameras, turn off the built-in flash unless you really need it, because pictures look much better with natural subtle shadows. The camera copes quite well with indoor lighting conditions, at least as well as a smartphone.

The camera is just what I wanted but the instructions book is in Japanese and the camera screen is in Japanese and therefore useless to me. I am extremely disappointed.

Only had the camera a short while but I like what I have seen so far. I tend to use the automatic setting as it does what I require. I like the zoom facility and from reading the instructions available on line, I can see the potential of the camera and the options it provides if I so wish to use them. I have used the wifi button on the camera to save photos on my laptop and ipad (need to download a free app from the Canon website choosing either Apple or Android app depending on your operating system - I am not very computer literate and I managed the process ok and it makes transferring photos to files on your laptop/ipad relatively simple - you can still transfer the photos by placing the memory card directly into your laptop if you prefer - or use a shop if you prefer to process the memory card.).I bought the CAISON digital camera case for the camera which I can also recommend.

This review is for a Canon IXUS 185 digital camera. It arrived boxed. In the box was the camera, a battery, a battery charger and a cable. The camera is very compact and lightweight. You can take regular photos, and videos. The quality of both is good. I didn't have a lot of luck getting glare-free photos with the flash enabled, but with good lighting the photos were not grainy without the flash. It has a good zoom, it goes up to 8x optical which allows for good long distance photos. But when it comes to macro pictures I struggled to get it to focus on things. While you can connect this camera to a PC (via a well hidden old style mini USB port on the side) you can't use it as a webcam. At least, I couldn't figure out a way. It only showed static images when I attached it directly to a monitor (via a mini HDMI port, also hidden next to the USB), and the quality was frankly awful. You can see them better on the built-in display. The price of this camera is too high for what it is. I have had cameras with similar functionality and quality in the past which I bought for around half the price of this one. I feel kind of ripped off having bought this camera. You can find much better else where, at a better price too. The only thing this really has going for it is its compact size and optical zoom.

If I could rate this camera and the service I have received from this seller with more than 5 stars I would! The service from Picsio had been amazing. The expected delivery was for between the 11-15 Feb. I wanted it before the 15th, so I messaged them to ask if it would be possible for them to speed up the delivery. I recieved my parcel today, which is a day before the expected delivery window. The camera is also amazing! I have just had to send another camera back to Amazon and have replaced it with this one. This new camera is so much better picture quality than the last camera I bought and the design is great! The images are detailed and the screen quality is much better than the last camera I bought, which means you can see the quality of the pictures you are taking much more easily.

Came good as new in all good condition
