Review: Absolute Quality - Godzilla Minus One is the thirty-third film of Toho’s Godzilla franchise and fifth of the Reiwa era which is set in postwar Japan as a former kamikaze pilot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after encountering the giant monster Godzilla only to have to confront it again after it is mutated by atomic testing. The film was directed by Takashi Yamazaki who also wrote the screenplay in his first involvement in the franchise. Godzilla Minus One runtime of 125 minutes essentially breezes by as the narrative, the cinematography, and special effects keep the viewers’ attention throughout. The extra time that Yamazaki had to work on the screenplay due to COVID-19 allowed him to get inspired by previous franchise installments beyond the 1954 original, this extra time is evident throughout aspect of the film. The human subplot revolving around failed kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima and his journey is one of the best in the entire franchise especially as it continually is drawn closer into Godzilla’s orbit. Regarding the acting overall, it is top notch across the cast and all the characters as believable. In any film in the franchise, how Godzilla looks and the action surrounding him is important, frankly it’s magnificent throughout and fully deserves the franchise’s first Oscar win for Best Visual Effects. I will say that how Yamazaki was able to skirt around why the Americans and General Douglas MacArthur aren’t in the film was a little funny—in reality there is no way MacArthur doesn’t make himself the hero by planning and executing a military operation to kill an atomic monster—when thinking about it but doesn’t detract from the film. Overall, this film is just a great film whether Godzilla or kaiju related or not which says a lot about its quality. Godzilla Minus One is an amazing film and frankly one of the best of the entire Toho franchise not only about how Godzilla looks and fights but also how human the film is, which adds to its overall quality.
