We had to put a thick blanket over the slats but it still worked okay. You can still store it between the slats and mattress when not in use. Well worth it when grandchildren are visiting. **Q: 2 questions: Does this come with 2 rails or do you need buy buy 2 of these? Also does it really need a box spring bed? I have a queen size bed support frame (flat wood planks 3-5 inches apart going across left to right that suports the matress only) will these work for this rail?** A: Yes, it comes with 2 rails. Absolutely well build and sturdy!Only set back for me was my bed mattress is set down in the bed frame and this rail only works for beds without an inset frame. It would work best for a bed with a boxspring. But I made it work by taking off the two under bed arms and used only the rail.
