I bought it specifically for a heavy book two-and-a-quarter inches thick, and it worked beautifully. The only problem I've had is that the metal balls that press down the pages break off because the plastic that connects them to the thin metal arms isn't strong enough to resist the pressure. To solve this problem, in place of the metal balls, I'm using pencil erasers.

Love this stand. I use it y to o hold my books while reading and also my iPad while watching movies before I go to sleep. It’s sturdy, swivels around and not an eyesore so I don’t have to hide it.
