What about the actual THICKNESS of the metal. Will I be able to close my door? With the weather stripping it's a pretty tight closure. Also, do you think can be successfully painted (e.g. spray)?

Metal is not thick and I can close my door easily. I live in a hot climate so don't know about the weather stripping. Outdoor furniture paint should do it.

How wide of a door will the hanger accept easily

If you mean the thickness of the door, then that's 1.8 inches. Thanks for your question!

When fully extended, will this hanger hold a wreath that weighs approximately 6.5 lbs?

Hi, we are the manufacturer and this wreath hanger is designed to support up to 10 lbs. We also make this same style adjustable wreath hanger that is designed to support up to 20 lbs. Thank you. Haute Decor

My door is thicker than 1.8 inches......approximately 1.16. Is this item flexible enough to fit my door?

Don't quite understand the measurement of 1.16, however, I measured my front door and it is 1 11/16" in width. The wreath holder is 2" across the top (the part that fits over the door). It should fit your door with room to spare.
