These smaller more portable sharpeners are great for smaller knives and blades. I have used ceramic sharpeners for a long time until my eyes were opened to diamond sharpeners. So far in my experience anything DMT sharpeners my blades faster and more consistently than anything I've tried. I expected the 3 tools to be of questionable sharpness, but I'm not a frequent turner and didn't want to spend a lot on a set to make the gift. I wasn't disappointed with the readiness of the turning set, they were unusable out of the box.
