Description
Teachers know that encouraging young children to talk and listen improves their ability to communicate. This book gives them a power tool aligned with the science of reading: the “Strive-for-Five” framework. These responsive conversations start with what children say and continue as the teacher listens and responds over five turns―with the goal of stretching their talking and thinking, knowledge, vocabulary, reasoning, and other skills that underpin reading success. In an accessible format that contains audio and video clips, along with classroom anecdotes and model conversations, Zucker and Cabell show why Strive-for-Five conversations are important and how teachers can use them to engage children and develop their language comprehension. As teachers use the framework to build students’ knowledge, vocabulary, reasoning, and other skills that underpin reading success, they'll also see students’ confidence grow as they share their individual stories, ideas, and questions.

Easy to read and understand
Purchased as a resource book for reading small groups. I wanted to learn some tips for directing small group discussion related to reading. This is geared more for PreK - 2 grade on how to engage students in more in depth conversations. It would be very helpful as a resource. It also has great tips for parents on how to foster the conversation learning process at home. I have picked up a few ideas on how to incorporate some of the skills in my small groups.

Great Science of Reading links !
With the Science of Reading being all the buzz right now this book was a good read for new and seasoned teachers! I teach a high school Child Development class with a preschool embedded into my program. I’m going to incorporate a lot of the tips from this book. In the pictures I tried to show the QR codes that are throughout this book. The links take you to videos examples as well as free resources!

Great book with practical strategies.
As the authors mentioned, 'talking is teaching,' this concept deeply resonates with me as an early childhood and special education teacher. This book would be an invaluable asset in any classroom toolkit. I wholeheartedly endorse it for anyone seeking research-backed methods to enhance young children's oral language skills. The thorough explanation of how to scaffold conversations between teachers and students to match students' levels of understanding can be applied across all teaching contexts, building and strengthening their knowledge. The conversational strategies outlined in the book can help develop students' communication skills and vocabulary. Additionally, I appreciate the suggestions provided for students who are nonverbal communicators. I am enjoying implementing the 'Strive for Five' approach, aiming for five conversational turns with every young child I interact with regularly.
