Review: Very accurate and easy to set up. - I am a new photography enthusiast that enjoys creating panorama shots. I have decided to add this head along with the Acratech leveling base mounted to a Falcam Tree Root center column accessory for a quick swap head setup for my Falcam tree root tripod. I used the setup on a training shot in the adirodacks. I was able to shoot 9 verticle shots in 2 rows (2 rows of 9) with no problem on my first attempt. I spent 3 hours marveling over the beautiful image of 6th Lake in the Adirondacks at dusk.. I spent some money but with limited experience I think that I bypassed some pitfalls I am proud of the purchase. It has performed far better than expected with ease. With my limited experience I cannot pass on to others a recommendation to purchase this. For me if ignorance is bliss this setup made me very happy for my expectations.
Review: Incredible.. just… incredible - There are a few photography products that spark passionate discussions. And one of those is a tripod head.. how many articles and reviews do we read, how many YouTube videos do we watch, in pursuit of that “perfect” tripod head. Right now for me, it’s the Acratech panoramic head (with clamp release). I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this tripod head. I will use and love this head for years to come So, who is this built for? Landscape, city scape, and nightscape photographers will LOVE this.. and likely will never go back (particularly if you use an L-Bracket which this head really shines with). It really isn’t meant for wildlife and definitely not for bird photography- that’s gimbal territory. Can you use this for wildlife and bird photography in a pinch? Sure. Just about any head can, but I wouldn’t purchase this head for that if it’s your primary genre. But photographers in other genres who normally use just a ball head really should consider this head. It’s light but built like a tank. The build quality is just incredible. Gorgeous finish, high quality components. And the Acratech folks have really thought of everything with the design and functionality. It has an open design so really easy to clean. The clamp release is VERY secure. It stays locked when you want it to.. clever design feature on the lever in that you can’t just flip it open.. it has an aluminum spring rail along the length of the lever you have to depress to disengage. The lever has a second built-in safety feature: in that the lever opens in two stages with a single motion. The first 25% pull just disengages the rails, but not enough to allow the camera to come out - you have to. continue opening the rlever to release the camera . Same in reverse - the last 25% fully locks it down Anyone who’s watched their camera fall off the head and hit the deck because of either accidentally knocking a lever will no doubt appreciate. And you will have NO DOUBT when your camera is locked in place unlike some other clap locking systems that don’t give any tension feedback. It’s very easy to adjust the tension to get the clamp perfectly set and just as easy to quickly readjust for a different rail or foot. The top plate rotates around (hex bolt), so if you have an L bracket on your camera but a foot on your lens that is 90 degrees to that.. no problem.. turn the top plate 90 degrees and bang, back in business to ensure pan & tilt functions as designed.. Love that nice little touch I really like the big clogged tilt knob.. easy to use with gloves. The pan knob, although much smaller is still very easy to operate even with gloves. I have yet to be limited in any way with this head shooting landscapes. But I will say it would be advisable to get a leveling head to give you just a little more flexibility but honestly I have had no problems. The only negative aspect is the top plate knob. In the cold, forget about using your hands to turn the knob.. hurts.. but.. Acratech thought that one out thoroughly; they have holes in the ends of the cogs you can slip the Allen wrench (that comes with it) in to tighten/loosen the knob. The bubble level is just perfect. Placed in the right spot (directly in the center of the head at the base just under the tilt rail). Perfect! You just tilt the head so you can look straight down to level (which is why the leveler is a fantastic companion). When I shoot panoramas, wow. Fantastic… so easy. Laser machining for degree markers that don’t rub off and there’s very little image loss from stitching in post (that is, without a nodal rail), but so what. Setting a good tilt knob tension using micro adjustments, (to reduce the potential for camera “flop”) is easy, unlike some other manufacturers whose tensioners are a little more finicky and less reliable. Now I certainly would not say this head will prevent camera flop, with the tension set correctly, I’m not as worried about it as with other tripod heads. The strength to weight ratio is ridiculous. It’s so light and yet they advertise it can readily hold 25 lbs. I think that’s an underestimate… I would be shocked if they didn’t test with a heavier load. It’s a beast. The head can handle the heaviest professional DSLR and lens I own… Bottom line.. as you can see I’m now an Acratech fan for life. Awesome head - yes, spendy, but worth absolutely every single penny. There’s little doubt this thing will outlast me, this is a purchase I will NEVER regret - but GET THE LEVER plate!! Game changer. Update January 2026: So, I thought it would be nice to add a long term review update. Has any of my opinions above changed? Yes. I love my Acratech head more than when I first purchased it. So much I purchased another (very attractive sale price at the local camera store…). The head is simply a beast. Utterly reliable. Totally stable. Easy to keep maintained due to the open design. Provided you pair this with a good base leveler (invest in a good one!) and spend the time leveling properly there’s VERY LITTLE image lost during the panoramic stitch/crop in post. I have complete confidence in this panoramic head. Use this with a camera fitted with an L-Bracket and you have a great setup. My shooting has yet to have been limited by the head. I have nothing negative to say about it at this point given my genres. Perfection.
