the waist is 40 at least, maybe larger. they are designed as a one size fits all. they have a draw string to pull it tight. I am a waist 34 and they fit great with the draw string pulled.

does this have 2 side pockets in addition to the back pocket? are these reasonably sized? hard to tell from the picture

It does have 2 side pockets in addition to the back pocket. I think they are reasonably sized, but I would suggest reading my response I gave previously to another potential buyer.

What measurements correlate to the different sizes?

I'd say that the large size pairs that I own would accommodate 34-47" waists

Are these lined? If not, are they thick enough to go commando without showing the groceries? Hate wearing cotton underwear for hot yoga...

No they are not lined and going commando would probably end up with some indecent exposure. Comfy otherwise though, but I always wear some sort of underwear with these.
