## Description

The most anticipated graphic novel of 2024, concluding the story of young Karen Reyes, the most inspiring “monster” in contemporary fiction. 2025 Whiting Award WINNER in Fiction Kirkus Reviews Best 100 Books of the Century (So Far) New York Times Notable Books of 2024 Chicago Public Library Favorite Books of 2024 Kirkus Reviews Best Fiction Books of 2024 NPR Books We Love 2024 Forbes Top Ten Graphic Novels of 2024 The Guardian Best Graphic Novels of 2024 Library Journal Best Graphic Novels of 2024 Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book Two is the eagerly awaited conclusion to one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of the past decade. Presented as the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes as she tries to solve the murder of her beloved and enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. In Book Two , dark mysteries past and present continue to abound in the tumultuous and violent Chicago summer of 1968. Young Karen attends a protest in Grant Park and finds herself swept up in a police stomping. Privately, she continues to investigate Anka’s recent death and discovers one last cassette tape that sheds light upon Anka's heroic activities in Nazi Germany. She wrestles with her own sexual identity, the death of her mother, and the secrets she suspects her brother Deez of hiding. Ferris’s exhilarating cast of characters experience revelations and epiphanies that both resolve and deepen the mysteries visited upon them earlier. Visually, the story is told in Ferris's inimitable style that breathtakingly and seamlessly combines panel-to-panel storytelling and cartoon montages filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster mag iconography. Full-color illustrations throughout

Review: A wonderful piece of art - This is the second installment of My Favorite Thing Is Monsters. Everything about it is great: the story, the characters and the art. The book is about a pre-teen girl navigating her family situation, her own existence, art and crime against the backdrop of a mysterious murder. If you are a comic reader, this comic is about you, but it is unlike any comic you have read before. I did not think I would relate so much to a young brown queer girl, as a grown ass cis white man. It took me a minute to get into the first book and I had to start it twice, on accounts of it being so different from what I am used to. So, do yourself a favor: get the first book and commit to the first 20 pages. You'll be back for the second book.
Review: A Masterpiece by an Amazing Storyteller - If you read and loved Part 1 and waited eagerly, and impatiently, for this volume to arrive, you will not be disappointed. Emil Ferris picks up right where she left off with a deeply heartfelt and memorable story that reminds us that monsters come in many forms, some scary and some alluring. At its heart a detective story, the book crosses so many genres that enlighten us with poetic observations, emotional responses and stunning artwork. This is what a graphic novel should strive to be. Emil Ferris is a genius!

The Godfather Two of Graphic Novels. In case you don't get the reference, its one of the rare case where the sequel might actually be better than the original. The Godfather 1&2 were movies and these are graphic novels. Comics are historically prone to numeric continuation and a sequel should not have been surprising. When it first arrived, I felt My Favorite thing is monsters was a singular work, I stand corrected. I also stand by my opinion! Buy them both. (or buy all four if you are unfamiliar with the Godfathers by those two too!) also buy one of those cool four color pens for any young kid with a desire to draw, who knows? You might inspire the next Emil Ferris. If that works, buy some kid a two ton hunk of marble because you might inspire the next Michealangelo. And if that works…
