Moccamaster KB

Updating my review!!! We moved, started a reno, and have been using this coffee maker this whole time (it is now mid July 2024), at least twice a day. Once our daughter started drinking coffee and for some reason locking the flow and forgetting to unkock, and I'd make coffee not realizing until the carafe wouldnt fill, we did learn that while that is perhaps a helpful feature, this causes the sludge/sediment to get poured into the mug and color and taste are off. It also seems a bit pointless because even if I am making a full pot, this thing brews it in just a couple of minutes seriously its fast. I can't imagine a time anyone would need to pause, pour, and restart, and if so, that sounds like a crazy household, but of that is you, my suggestion would just be to ALWAYS unlock the lever so the next brew is normal. Other than that, I try to remember to descal the machine with urnex descaler about twice a year. The machine is still quiet, and when I let (yes, let- this is one way I show my love, through acts of service) my husband brew his coffee (I don't drink it) he still gets a kick out of watching it brew. Very happy with the machine. It is simple, brews well, just wish it had auto off, but once you make coffee regularly in it shutting it off becomes muscle memory like anything else. Now I'm looking to upgrade his machine this Christmas to another brand that auto grinds and brews so our daughter can take this and our grinder of to *sniffle* college next fall! (Pro tip-a yr or 2 before sending your kid into the world, start upgrading your own kitchen cookware and gadgets, especially if nice to begin with, and hold on to the originals to set your kiddo up with. They will likely have a higher quality product (even cheaper things were made better years ago) than if you get them entry level stuff, they (should) already know how to use it, and setting up a dorm or apartment doesn't feel so expensive and chaotic come time. Plus, maybe it helps them feel at and think of home). Got this in December to replace a Hamilton Beach that was a few months and a happy no of garbage. My husband is the coffee drinker, and while not at all a coffee snob he has lamented burnt tastes from Starbucks, and lackluster flavor from home devices. All while continuing to drink without making any changes. I got this for him for Christmas, and he questioned it at first due to price and still just being a coffee maker. But after trying it out, he likes it a lot. He has remarked on several occasions since December that it makes a very good cup of coffee. I am the primary coffee maker and I love how fast and quiet it is. It is even fun to watch, our kids get a kick out of watching the bubbles go up the inner tube when it is brewing. He likes having two settings for the warming plate. He has no complaints of a burnt taste. Brews at a proper tempurature. While it does not stop dripping if you pull the carafe away, it has a control to stop the drip, and it fully does this, whereas all our previous makers still dripped some. Simple and straight forward to use. No auto shut off, but for a home unit, how often do you brew more than. Is immediately needed? So shut off when you get your cup. A power light indicates it is on. Clean up is very easy too. No complaints here, still very pleased with it, and it is performing just as well as the first day.

The Technivorm Moccamaster is an excellent coffee maker. I makes fantastic coffee (probably close to the best possible for a simple drip style unit). HOWEVER... the price! How does one justify $300+ when there are so many cheaper options? If one of the following describes you, steer away from this coffee maker: you ... Just want something to make your Folgers, Want something fancy (expensive) to keep up with the Joneses, Want cutting edge "technology," Want lots of "features," Don't take good care of your possessions, Don't keep things for many years, Want the best "deal" (not necessarily "value" which is more complicated) possible, Make coffee only occasionally (not every week), or of course Want a machine that will make hot chocolate, chai anything, cappuccino, or anything other than straight up high quality drip coffee. This does one thing, simply. It is very well made, in Europe, by well paid employees, and designed to last a lifetime if properly maintained. If it breaks, it is designed to be able to be FIXED with widely available parts unlike nearly every Chinese made small appliance on the market today. These qualities make for a great product but at a relatively high price. Now that we have that out of the way, here is my review of this product after a half year of use: I like my coffee flavorful and strong. I typically make one pot every couple of days, saving the unused coffee in the fridge to be used for iced coffee later. I believe it is advisable to make exactly one full pot at a time for best results. One pot is about 48oz or 6c. It says 10 cups on the water reservoir, so they must think each "cup" (of coffee) is about 4.8oz. There is also what appears to be liter measures, but I question the accuracy there. You certainly can put in less water and try to make a partial pot, but I have reservations about the quality of the results. At any rate, you get about 6c. of coffee for a pot. I'm always amazed and impressed how fast and quiet it works. Granted, my comparison is to my old, cheap, $12.99 coffee maker that gurgled and carried on for what seemed like forever. I love the Moccamaster for it's quiet, smooth operation. Cleanup for me is to simply dispense with the #4 cone style filter and spent grounds (compostable), rinse the detachable parts, of which there are several, and leave to air dry. Not the easiest cleanup, but not bad at all. There are two switches only; both of which operate with a silky smoothness and a satisfyingly weighty metallic "click." Flip the left switch to start brewing. The light on the switch will turn on signaling power. If you don't flip it back (off), it will automatically do so in 90 minutes. The right switch controls the temperature of the heating plate (not the water heating element which always heats the water to optimal brewing temperature). Flip the switch one way for hotter coffee, the other way for somewhat less hot coffee. The idea here is that some like HOT coffee, but quality will be effected with time. The less hot setting will allow the coffee to stay fresh for the entire 90 minutes, if desired. I think the less hot setting is plenty hot, so I keep it there. The only other adjustable component is the brew basket. It can be set to "open," "closed," or "half way." I usually just leave it open. If you close it for some reason, DON'T forget to open it before the next brew. Disaster!! (Trust me you will not make that mistake twice.) I'm not sure what the purpose of a user adjustable brew basket is (as opposed to one that automatically shuts off the flow when the carafe is removed). Supposedly the half way setting can be used when brewing a half pot. Also, closing it off at the beginning of brewing can allow the coffee to "bloom" briefly before opening it up for the remainder of the brew. One positive consequence of not having the automatic shut off is that the carafe doesn't have to physically contact the brew basket which provides a cleaner look and no moving parts to keep clean. (Just don't forget to slide it to "open" before brewing!) The construction is quite good. The main structure is heavy gauge metal, beautifully painted. Mine is matte black which hides the smudges and finger prints nicely. Other finishes, especially shiny ones, might take more care to look good. It says the heating elements are copper which will stay corrosion free as opposed to cheaper, failure prone aluminum elements in nearly all other coffee makers. The hot plate on which the carafe sits appears to be ceramic, looks very nice and is easy to wipe clean. The plastic parts are well made, but somewhat flimsy; definitely not commercial grade. If one is hard on one's appliances, I could imagine breaking or cracking the brew basket, brew basket holder, water reservoir lid, or carafe lid. Of course all of these parts can be replaced if needed. The water reservoir itself is very sturdy (acrylic?). I wish the plastic end caps were metal, or at least better looking plastic. The Moccamaster's style would be perfect in a modern, minimalist kitchen; but may not be everyone's cup of tea. (er, you know what I mean) I love the design because it looks like no other coffee maker, serious but not fancy. They sell colors and finishes that could easily make this coffee maker the showpiece of a kitchen, if desired. (However, this particular model only is available in stainless or black.) Not too many complaints with this unit, but nothing is perfect. The flimsy plastics could feel and look more rugged, especially the end caps. Operation is a little bit of a process (removing and replacing the lid on the water reservoir, removing and replacing to lid on the brew basket, etc.). I'm fine with it, but some might feel it is a little tedious. Finally, my biggest problem is with the carafe. I do love it's overall look and feel, but the handle is problematic. The plastic handle is attached to a metal band that holds it to the glass. The metal band is not tight enough to keep the handle from making the whole thing feel flimsy, especially when lifting and pouring a full pot. My old cheap coffee maker had a larger plastic handle piece that attached to the glass at two spots making it feed sturdy when pouring. However it didn't look sleek like the Moccamaster's carafe. Are looks more important than feel? Don't know, but I wish I could have both. The other issue with the carafe is it's inability to pour without dripping or even spilling slightly. I am a careful pourer, but I can't get a clean pour for the life of me. Oh well, I always have a tea towel handy when pouring myself a cup to keep things tidy. In conclusion, the Technoverm Moccamaster is one of my favorite possessions, but it is not made for the masses. This somewhat elitist appliance may, simultaneously make you feel proud and guilty. But, if you truly love good, simply made coffee, as I do (and have deepish pockets); the pride and guilt will pass, and you will be left with a coffee experience you can savor for a lifetime.

**UPDATE**: I am 4.5 years strong with this coffee maker and it still brews an incredible cup of coffee! Although, I am now on my 2nd replacement carafe since purchasing. The carafe glass is very thin and easy to break or shatter. Apparently I am too rough when it comes to washing dishes. I contacted the company thinking it was under warranty only to be disappointed in finding out it is not. So buyer beware. A new replacement carafe is quite expensive at around $45 on Amazon. Everything inside the coffee maker is under a lifetime warranty but of course the carafe is not. That might be the only negative about this coffee maker. I did months of research during COVID for a coffee maker seeing as everything was closed at the time and I couldn’t get my daily cup from the commercial brewer down at my local bodega. I kept coming back to this coffeemaker due to the highly rated reviews and finally took the splurge after justifying the high cost of it. If you’re on the fence about buying this due to the ridiculously high sticker price, don’t be. Overall it was worth the investment. It’s held up strong after daily use, with sometimes multiple pots a day. I recommend using a cleaning solution to run through once every 6 months. You can find it at your local grocery store cleaning aisle or just order a bottle off Amazon which is pretty inexpensive. It makes sure to clean out all the mineral deposits and gunk that builds up in it. I recommend doing this with ALL coffee makers regardless of brand. Although it may look fancy since I’ve never seen a coffee maker look the way the MoccaMasters do, I can assure you this coffee maker is as simplistic as it gets. If you’re looking for a coffee maker that has all the bells and whistles on it, from auto timers and shut offs, then this isn’t the one for you. The only thing I can say I miss is setting my coffee timer the night before and waking up to the aromas of a pot brewing. But that doesn’t give you the freshest pot of coffee possible. Water and grains sitting overnight in a coffeemaker isn’t going to produce the best cup of coffee. This coffee maker gets the pot hotter than any cup I’ve ever had which is a huge selling point alone. Pretty close to as hot as a commercial brewer. But the fact that this company only manufactures and sells these coffee makers means that they’ve perfected the one product they have and back it up with an impressive lifetime warranty! If something breaks with the components, they will fix it or replace the part. This is a machine that should last 10+ years, if not a lifetime. 🤞🏼 I suggest buying the model where the brew basket can close, open half way or open all the way. As I read some reviewers complaining about the grains not getting fully wet. I always start out my brew with the basket closed, will take a spoon and stir the hot water + grains to make sure they’re fully saturated before I open up basket to start pouring out. *** Also, you will NEED to buy a coffee bean grinder. I purchased one from Walmart (Hamilton Beach) for $15 and let me just say how impressive this thing is? I’m on year 15 with it and it still works the bees knees! An incredible, fresh cup of coffee starts with the beans and grinding them yourself is truly a must to get the best cup of coffee! I use to keep my beans in the freezer thinking it would keep them fresher but lately I’ve been preferring to keep them tightly sealed at room temp in my cabinet. It will take some time to figure out how much coffee grains to water ratio you like and that can differ on the beans you buy. Dunkin Donuts Original Whole beans are still my favorite and go too. I’ve tried so many other variety of beans but prefer a more light to medium cup and Dunks beans hit just right for me! All in all, this was well worth the investment and it makes a great cup of coffee! I am known to all my friends and family now as the “Coffee Connoisseur/Coffee Guru”. Nobody makes a better cup of coffee than me. Hahaha.

How often can I say the coffee is great from this machine? Well, it's great! That it makes the best coffee is the most important thing and the reason for the 5 stars. I do not bemoan the high price. Those of us who shoot for excellent coffee tend to open our wallets to fund our addiction. You want great coffee? Here it is! Good things: + It is quiet. The loudest sound is the gentle gurgling of the water into the brew basket There is no raucous boiling and sputtering sound. + The hot plate does not ruin the coffee and it shuts off after 100 minutes. Of course, coffee does not sit well after brewing regardless of the hot plate. However, I do like that the hot plate itself does not ruin the coffee. It is quite gentle. + So easy to clean. I have the glass carafe. I am done with thermal carafes. You can see when glass is clean and there is no real point in keeping the coffee for a long time in a thermal carafe because within an hour the taste is simply ruined. It's hot, but the volatile essences are long gone.Anyway the parts that need cleaning come off the machine easily and clean up with no unusual trouble. I love it. + It brews quickly. I don't really need the speed, but coffee that takes too long to brew is going to be bitter. +The 5-year warranty is better than average. The warranty does not cover any of the parts that you can buy separately. So if you have a problem with the carafe, or brew basket or the lids you are on your own. Also, only Amazon and Huford are authorized dealers. If you buy from somebody else you have no long warranty. + The markings on the reservoir actually make sense and are easy to read. You have to remember that European cups are only 4oz. Once you get that into your head you can properly use the correct ratio of coffee to water. For best results, weigh your coffee beans and then grind them. It makes 40oz max so if you enjoy your 12-ounce American mugs of coffee you can expect no more than 3 fills. + The copper heating element is the best. Really, this might sound like marketing hype but the most sensible metal for a water heating coil is copper. Aluminum, used in cheaper brewers, is subject to corrosion and leaking. + Auto Off after 100 minutes. OK, the brewer boiler shuts off when the water is all dispensed. However the warmer stays live. If you want to shut off the warmer just shut off the lighted power switch. If you forget to shut down the machine, leaving the hot plate on, it turns off after 100 minutes. I've never left mine on that long to test it so I'm taking their word for it. Still, this is a nice safety and user-friendly feature. One day, I'll forget and I'll be glad it shut off for me. +Pouring from the carafe is OK. If I pour at a reasonable pace there is no splashing or dripping. So if you are calm and collected it works just great. If you are in a big hurry it will be messy. It's your choice. Now for the nitpicking. - The brewer handle looks and feels flimsy. It is thin plastic. - The switch on the basket that controls flow has a weak detent for the middle position.I have to fiddle with it a lot to get it to the right position. It is a miserable contraption and I hate it as much as I love the brewed coffee. - The power cord. It is very thick, making it difficult to route around the counter, and it seems longer than it needs to be. Surely it does not have to be this heavy. I suppose that on higher European voltage the cord does not have to be so heavy but in the conversion to our lower voltage in the USA we are punished with this heavy cord. I have power tools that draw a lot of current that have cords easier to manage than this. Surely Technivorm can find a source for a more manageble cord. I love this machine so I gladly tolerate the minor nitpicks I have called out.

Don't even waste your time with any other coffee maker - this is it! Are you sick of terrible coffee at home? Want your coffee to taste like what you get at a real coffee shop? This is the ticket. That was really my only requirement. I wanted to be able to make GOOD coffee that tastes just like what I get a my local coffee shop - at home. This coffee maker makes that possible! The first obstacle was deciding which model. I watched MANY reviews and read through comparisons before deciding this was the one I wanted. Since we frequently make 4 cups - more often than we make larger amounts, I liked the versatility of being able to move the little switch to allow the water to steep a bit longer for smaller pots. That feature is not offered in other models. The hot plate does turn off automatically after a certain amount of time - nothing else I could want it to do. I had considered the models with the carafes rather than the glass pots, but as I read and my personal experience is that insulated carafes absorb odor and are difficult to rid of that odor. Plus, I only make the amount of coffee I plan on drinking within the hour anyway - so no need to worry about it sitting around for hours at a time. Also, a taste test video I watched actually rated the coffee taste higher from the glass model that had sat around on the heater for an hour as BETTER than the one from the insulated carafe. Not that I recommend drinking coffee after it has sat around for an hour anyway - but that was enough to convince me. I imagine the glass carafe might also be less expensive to replace if replacement was needed - but that is just my guess no real facts to back it up with. I also want to mention I purchased this model for $227. HOW? Amazon Warehouse deals. Check for them under the "used" section. They aren't actually "used" at all - usually it just means the box has damage - however sometimes there is more to it than that so read the item description carefully! In my case it was just box damage and the coffee maker was in perfect new condition! Great bargain for me! On brewing - I watched some "expert" videos on recommendations about how to brew in this machine. Some people recommended closing the drip valve and stirring at specific intervals of the brew etc - I tried all of these methods - and I did not care for the outcome. What works best for me is to use a standard "American" ratio of 2T coffee to 6oz water. This takes some figuring out and some approximation because the cups listed on this machine are 4oz cups - so you'll have to do math (the horrors) - but that's the best ratio I've found for my own personal preference. Also, I turn the drip valve to the fully open setting for anything 6 cups or over and to half for anything below that. Also on the heating plate - I only ever turn it to half. I felt that the full heat setting was way too hot - especially after you've poured a few cups. Anyway you can play with settings on your own, but these are my golden ratios. I also want to make a note which should be common sense but I feel must be said - please make sure you are using FRESH coffee and are freshly grinding it before each pot. Don't use crap coffee and expect it to taste wonderful - that's not how this works. Use good freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee and filtered water and you will be golden with this machine.

I was shockd buy a few things with this machine. First everyone said how big it was. It is actually very small considering. I was also shocked that you need to pre soak the coffee filter before you put it in the basket. Then you need to stand there while it sends water to the basket and close the trap door so all of the coffee grounds get wet. You would think they would make a spray bar that did that automatically. Now it does have the proper water temperature for brewing coffee. I have used many different versions of Bun commercial brewers over the past 40 years. Some costing 4 times what this unit cost. It is not really that expensive when you consider how well it is built and that it is pretty fast as well. The 1/2 pot option is not something Iwould probably ever use and the Auto shutoff is also nice. So if you don't mind a few quirks this is the perfect coffee maker for you if you want to be able to make good coffee and really adjust it to your taste. OK new information. My unit had a problem with the plate timer. It would only stay on for 1/3 of the time is was supposed to. I contacted Mochamaster support and they responded immediatly. We worked through a few things and came to the conclusion that this unit had a defect and should be returned. Now here is where things get strange. You have to repack this unit just like it came to you and that was difficult. I wish I had taken photos of unpacking it so I could have done it perfectly. Now when i sent in the return request I found out i had to return this item to the seller for I guess inspection and wait for them to make a decision. And they stated this could take from one week to several. So here i sit with $360.00 invested in a machine i no longer have and i am forced to wait for this seller to make their decision. So buyer beware. Now after i had alrady started this Amazon return process Mochamaster said I could return it to one of their service centers and they would fix it. I informed them I had already started the Amazon return process so i was pretty much stuck in that loop. But if anyone has an issue with this or any mochamaster machine Iwould suggest dealing with Mochamaster service it may be quicker and easier. I will update this again when I get this situation straightened out.

This coffee maker seemed to have everything I was looking for: - Not made in China. It's made in the Netherlands, and while not exactly a place that I would think of when it comes to quality coffee, I would prefer it over any product that isn't made in China - which is apparently 98% of all coffee makers. - Apparent good quality product - see above. Reflective in a higher price, my assumption is that if the product is more expensive, the quality is usually better than the comparatively cheaper brands. - Brewing process - using copper coils to quickly heat the water and the pour-over process to maximize the bean flavor sounds ideal. Unfortunately, I didn't get the opportunity to even brew a pot of coffee, as I was underwhelmed at the quality when unboxing the product. The plastic parts (of which there were many) felt flimsy and the glass pot seemed way too thin to do its job without breaking. One look at the reviews confirmed my suspicions. Aside from this, the corner of the hot plate had a large enamel chip well within the view of the QC sticker that was adhered to the body. It needed to go back, but I was undecided as to exchange it or return it. Fortunately, Amazon made the choice easy as it didn't give me the option to exchange it. Fine, I'll return it for credit, which usually only takes a few days. I packed up the product that had only graced my kitchen for less than an hour and it was shipped back the next dat. For some reason, two weeks have gone by, the item has finally been confirmed returned and they still have not credited my account (in fact, I'm told I have to wait another week). I ought to charge them interest for keeping my money for so long. So, in short, this product is not worth the dollar amount in regards to quality or due to the very poor return policy. And all I wanted was a damned cup of coffee...

First off, I love the design of this machine. Replaceable parts of decent quality is a winner in my book. And it makes very tasty coffee! However, there are a couple of issues I have to bring up. First, the cheap coffee pot. With a flimsy handle, fairly weak glass, and yucky plastic piece, it's obvious they went cheap for this part. Half of the time I pour my coffee some ends up on the floor! I have a Ninja coffee pot from a previous machine that is much more solid, which I'd be embarrassed to own up to as the manufacturer. Second, 3 times out of 10 the water will flood out of the filter area, and the grind will clog up the works, and I end up with a mess of grind all over the machine and especially in the coffee pot. These issues would be overlooked if this was a $30 Mr Coffee, but this thing costs over $300!! I do have a bit of buyer's remorse as I don't think it was worth the price, but because when it does work it makes very yummy coffee, three stars.

This may be more expensive than other drip machines, but you get what you pay for (it's hand-built in the Netherlands..!!). The company, distributor (in Edmonton), and numerous online reviews touts that its easy to fix, and easy to get parts. So it should last a long time, and is easily reparable! In our times of cheap goods and high turnover replacements... this is a welcomed relief! The build quality is great, it brews very quickly, and makes very delicious coffee! Its also easy to clean. We had a Cuisinart before this, and can notice a definite taste difference. Its also not as big as some reviews make it up to be; its just "long" - but rather thin. The downsides? I suppose it doesn't have many bells and whistles... like being programmable, clock, lights...etc... and it doesn't "bloom" the coffee (we got the model that has a manual drip adjustment - so we just do it on our own...). If you want a great machine that consistently makes great coffee... this is the product for you. You won't regret it for a minute.

Cumple altamente sus expectativas, agradable a la vista, para disfrutar de un buen café

What led me to this brand of coffee maker was not wanting to buy a made in China machine - I’m trying to keep as much of our money as possible away from Chinese made products. Very little assembly needed, almost a ‘plug n play’ set-up. It comes packed quite well so there should be no worries about breakage during transit. Initial impressions are it seems to be very high quality and built to last. The 5yr warranty certainly helps with that assessment. The carafe seems a bit smaller than the ones I’m used to seeing for North America but that’s just an observation. With Covid who’s getting guests, right? We’ll see how that works with a crowd. The good thing is it brews quite fast, with minimal noise, and keeps the coffee at a perfect temp for 90 minutes. So far I’m very pleased with the performance and the coffee tastes great. I’m using up some ground Costco coffee I have, for now, but will switch to grinding beans when I need to restock. A burr grinder is recommended so there’s another purchase in my future. I’ve gotten over the sticker shock and am quite happy with the machine. If you can handle the price I’d say go for it!

After a year of use, this coffee maker is expensive but worth it. It constantly brews very good coffee. This machine will not only extract the grind aromas but also the paper filter's odour. I had the problem and so I started using premium/fresh filters to have only the great coffee taste. During my year of use, I can say for sure that I like the machine but I have noticed a couple of minor issues: 1) The basket flow valve is flaky. It leaks a bit when it's shutdown and the half-flow setting is not always opened at its maximum. Most of the time I brew with valve fully opened. 2) The machine takes a lot of current during brew, when I run both, my microwave and the Moccamaster on the same outlet it shuts down the electrical switch on the electric panel. If I run the toaster at the same time it's fine, but not the microwave. 3) The spray head doesn't cover all the grinds. As the water rises in the basket, it eventually soaks all the grinds, however I mix the grinds with a spoon after about 30 secs of brew for a quicker soak. 4) The carafe is okay, but it tends to leak coffee while pouring when it's full. I choose this hot plate version because a thermos tends to absorb coffee heat and thus less hot coffee over time. Overall, I like the machine, and I have learnt to live with the minor issues because I found no other machine in build and brew quality. I still give it a 5/5 rating.

After 2.5 years still loving and highly recommend a Moccamaster 59691 coffee maker. I use this machine 3 times a day. Makes the best tasting coffee no matter what brands I've used. Excellent temperature control keeping coffee warm without the coffee tasting old/bitter. I was hesitant at first to pay the high price but no regrets and pleased it's made in the Netherlands. This replaced my Zorjirushi coffee maker because the carafe model did not make hot enough coffee for me, otherwise it is also an easy machine to use.
