The Inmate

Here's a detailed review of "The Inmate" by Freida McFadden: Gripping Premise with Chilling Twists: "The Inmate" throws you into the dark and suspenseful world of a maximum-security prison, where new nurse practitioner Brooke Sullivan soon realizes her carefully constructed life is on the verge of unraveling. The main premise is gripping: Brooke's assigned to care for Shane Nelson, a notorious inmate with whom she shares a hidden past. This sets the stage for a story riddled with tension, secrecy, and the constant threat of danger. Compelling Characters with Hidden Depths: McFadden excels at crafting complex characters with hidden depths. Brooke is initially presented as a dedicated professional, but as the story progresses, cracks begin to show in her facade. Her internal struggles and conflicting emotions as she confronts her past are palpable. Shane, the enigmatic inmate, is equally well-developed. His motivations are shrouded in mystery, keeping the reader guessing until the very end. The supporting cast, from the prison guards to Brooke's colleagues, also add depth and intrigue to the narrative. Fast-Paced Plot with Twists and Turns: The plot of "The Inmate" is a rollercoaster ride of suspense and tension. McFadden masterfully builds up the atmosphere, layering on secrets and betrayals that keep the reader constantly on edge. The pacing is perfect, with just the right balance of character development and action to keep you turning pages. Just when you think you have everything figured out, a new twist throws you off track, leaving you desperate to uncover the truth. Themes of Guilt, Redemption, and Second Chances: Beneath the surface of the thrilling plot, "The Inmate" explores deeper themes of guilt, redemption, and the possibility of second chances. Brooke's journey is a stark reminder that past mistakes can have lasting consequences, but also that forgiveness and healing are possible. Shane's story raises questions about the nature of good and evil, and whether even the most hardened criminals deserve a chance at redemption. Overall, "The Inmate" is a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page. McFadden's masterful storytelling, complex characters, and cleverly woven plot twists make this a must-read for fans of the genre. Here are some additional points to consider: * The novel's setting, the maximum-security prison, adds a layer of realism and claustrophobia to the story. * The book's exploration of ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals in such a setting is thought-provoking. * Some readers might find the ending somewhat predictable, but the journey to get there is well worth the ride. I would recommend "The Inmate" to anyone who enjoys fast-paced thrillers with complex characters and unexpected twists. It's a dark and suspenseful read that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. I hope this review is helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.

It keeps u hooked from the start to end with surprising twist. All characters are so interesting and it's a great choice if u like reading psychological thrillers

Must read this. It's full of suspense till the very end of the story. You cannot expect the twist at the end

Too many twists plus the main character lacked depth. Could have been short. End was good I enjoyed the book.

🚨 I did NOT sign up for a psychological prison meltdown 💀🔒 but Freida McFadden said: “let’s ruin your peace anyway” 😭🔥 Locked doors. Dark pasts. Secrets stacked like evidence 🧠📁 and EVERY character acting suspicious enough to be arrested emotionally 👀 One second you’re confident you solved it… next second 💥 you’re questioning your own brain cells. This book doesn’t just twist, nope it just strangles your theories slowly 😵‍💫📖 and suddenly it’s 3 AM and you’re still saying “okay last chapter” (liar) 😭 ⛓️ tension: 10/10 🧠 paranoia: ongoing condition 📚 sleep: cancelled Would you survive this prison… or become part of the mystery? 😈

Freida McFadden really knows how to pull the rug out from under you. The way she wrote Josh is honestly brilliant. You spend the whole book looking at this kid through one lens, trying to figure out how much his trauma or his genetics are messing with him. Then that ending hits, everything clicks, and it completely flips the whole story on its head. It's so creepy and well-done. And Margie was such a great addition. In a book where you can't trust anyone, the grandmother just felt so grounded. Her character added actual weight to the family drama instead of just being background noise.

Such a plot twist was not expected.

Print quality is good, story was average not meet level of Never Lie, but Epilogue was mind blowing

Thrilling and gripping thriller. At first, it may seem like you’re reading an ordinary story, but as the pages go by, you’ll realize you won’t be able to put the book down, eager to find out what happens next.

私は整形外科医なので、傷の縫合や骨折治療のシーンを楽しめました。アメリカでは傷の縫合を看護師がするんですねー。物語も、中々意外な真犯人で良かったです。

Tolles, spannendes Freida-Buch. Wie immer ein echter page-turner, nail-biting Story! Kann man nichts falsch machen, außer zu sammeln und pro Woche ein Buch lesen.

Freida McFadden’s The Inmate is another gripping psychological thriller that pulls you in from the first page and keeps you guessing until the end. With her signature style—short chapters, cliffhanger endings, and plenty of jaw-dropping reveals—McFadden delivers an intense, binge-worthy story that’s hard to put down. Plot Summary (No Spoilers) Brooke Sullivan, a single mother and nurse, takes a job at a men’s prison—only to discover that the man she once loved, Shane Nelson, is an inmate… and possibly a murderer. Shane was convicted of killing Brooke’s high school best friend, but as their paths cross again, secrets from the past begin to surface—and Brooke is forced to question everything she thought she knew. What Works Well McFadden excels at writing fast-paced thrillers, and The Inmate is no exception. The tension is well-maintained throughout, and the prison setting adds a unique sense of danger and claustrophobia. Brooke is a relatable narrator, torn between her responsibilities as a mother and her unresolved past. The emotional stakes feel real, and the twists—especially toward the final act—land with impact. Why 4 Stars, Not 5 While the plot is engaging, some of the twists feel slightly over-the-top or require a bit of suspension of disbelief. A few character decisions, particularly in the second half, felt more driven by shock value than realism. That said, it’s part of the ride with McFadden—her books are designed to entertain and keep you turning pages, and in that respect, The Inmate absolutely succeeds. Final Verdict The Inmate is a dark, twisty, and thoroughly entertaining thriller with a strong emotional core. It may not be the most subtle or realistic of McFadden’s novels, but it’s undeniably fun, compulsively readable, and full of surprises. A solid 4-star read for fans of fast-paced thrillers, shocking secrets, and morally complex characters. Freida McFadden knows how to keep you hooked—and this one delivers exactly what her fans crave.

Great read, didn't want to put it down
