I use it for hobbyist micro soldering and its great. I have no trouble seeing what I am doing. The extra lighting options are nice, but honestly I basically never use the worm lights on the side. Nice to have them, but if you want to save a few dollars you can get a model without them and you almost certainly won't miss them. My kids also like using it from time to time to look at things up close. This isn't the type of microscope where you can see cells, as I saw at least one questionable review stating, but it certainly works to see all the little details of insects or see the grooves in your finger prints. My very young daughter saw a speck of dirt one time in those groves on one of her fingers and now like to look at her hands after she washes them to see if they are really clean. It gets quite a bit of use around here. I would recommend keeping it plugged into power. If you are using it for brief periods like inspecting a circuit board and turning it off it will last for an ok amount of time, but drains pretty fast so if you are working on something more in-depth like recapping a retro console it might run out of power on you. It certainly has for me. I have not tested the recording quality on a larger screen, but looks the same to me playing back on the on-board display. It's not really a feature I use. The navigation is also a bit finicky getting between photo and video recording and then getting into the saved files the time I tested it. I have used the HDMI output briefly, and that worked fine, but did not see any value in using it. The 7" screen has been fine and created less of a disconnect in my head moving my tools around the board I am looking at when working on repairs. The quality and detail of the images are amazing. I use it in the field while do macroinvertebrate samples on small streams in our area. Not only is it a great tool for identification, but also it is a wonderful teaching tool for children and adults alike.
