Box set of eight classic Clint Eastwood films. In 'Play Misty for Me' (1971) Dave Garland (Clint Eastwood) is a Californian DJ who runs a late night call-in show, and receives regular requests from a female caller for Erroll Garner's 'Misty'. The fan, Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter), turns out to be a maniacal stalker. In the western 'High Plains Drifter' (1973) the unwelcome arrival of a stranger (Eastwood) in the town of Lagos causes resentment and fear among the locals. However, when they come under threat from a band of escaped convicts, it is to the stranger that the townsfolk turn for salvation. In 'The Beguiled' (1970), during the American Civil War, a wounded Union soldier (Eastwood) is taken in by the all-female staff of a Confederate Louisiana girls' school as their 'prize'. However, the soldier cunningly plays the women off against each other, working on their sexual frustrations and biding his time until he can make an escape. 'Breezy' (1973) is an Eastwood-directed effort in which Breezy (Kay Lenz) is a teenage hippy hitchhiker taken advantage of by a ruthless rotter who wants to use her for sex. She escapes in a remote area and meets kindly middle-aged man Frank Harmon (William Holden) whom she hopes will take her in. Harmon is (rightfully) reluctant and his worst imaginable scenario comes true when the impressionable teen falls in love with him. In 'Joe Kidd' (1972) Eastwood plays a drunken tracker coerced by American business tycoon Robert Duvall to go in search of Mexican agitator John Saxon. The film is scripted by renowned crime writer Elmore Leonard. In 'Two Mules for Sister Sarah' (1969) a gold-digger (Eastwood) in old Mexico shows his fundamentally noble nature by saving a 'nun' (Shirley Maclaine) from being raped. She turns out in fact to be a prostitute, and the odd couple team up, facing continual confrontation with the French forces. In 'Coogan's Bluff' (1968) Eastwood is Arizona deputy Walt Coogan, sent to New York city to escort a prisoner home. The prisoner isn't ready to be transferred back to Arizona so Coogan cuts a few corners. This helps the prisoner escape and, after Coogan clashes with the Sherrif McElroy (Lee J. Cobb), he is ordered back to Arizona. In 'The Eiger Sanction' (1975) college lecturer Jonathan Hemlock (Eastwood) tops up his university paypacket by carrying out the occasional assassination. His latest assignment involves joining a climbing expedition up the Eiger, identifying the Russian killer amongst the group, and then neutralising his threat. Review: An excellent collection - I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood, and if you are too, this collection is essential. It's also not bad for the price, as there are many films included and some are Mr Eastwood's best. PLAY MISTY FOR ME is the first film that he directed, and a pioneering one too (Fatal Attraction imitated it many years later). TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA is a wonderful Western comedy, with a mellow humour. It stars Shirley Maclaine as a wandering nun. COOGAN'S BLUFF is interesting for any Clint fan as it was his first cop movie, made just before 'Dirty Harry', but the character that Eastwood portrays harks from Texas and is similar to a tough cowboy in mindset. HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER is one of Clint's best, not to mention darkest, Westerns. Playing yet another strange man-with-no-name wandering on muleback into a Western town, Clint's character here helps the locals to fight off marauding attackers in unexpected ways. I liked it best for the memorable characters (including a sympathetically portrayed dwarf) and imaginative imagery (the town becomes something of a character in itself). THE BEGUILED is an excellent film. I won't give away the ending, but be prepared for an unsettling turn of events when, during the American Civil War, a wounded soldier stumbles across a girls boarding school where, after being tended to, he develops more than one romantic relationship as the frustrated girls (and their female guardian) begin to compete jealously for his romantic attentions. THE EIGER SANCTION does not begin especially well but gets going after the first third or so of the movie. It has some great views of mountainous American landscapes, authentic rock-climbing scenes, Clint jogging in a very fetching tight red T-shirt (ok, that's more for the ladies), and a terrific climax. A pretty good little seventies thriller. JOE KIDD (a so-so Western) could be placed under the category 'throwaway movie', but it's fine for a chilled-out Sunday afternoon. Apparently the highlight of the movie (slight spoiler here), where a train simply smashes through the wall, was Clint's idea! BREEZY I have not seen yet, but it should be worth a watch if you are interested in Mr Eastwood's earliest directorial efforts seeing as he made it in 1973. He does not star but it looks like a charming love story between a young, hippyish girl and an older man. Review: The Universal Studios collection - In his early days, Clint was under contract with Universal and these are a collection of his films from their studios. Some classics, some not so memorable, but a great collection to have at this price.

Eastwood over the years
Nothing to dislike in any of this collection,if you like Clint Eastwood. Personally, I think he was at his best playing the silent watchful cowboy. His best for me was 'The good, the bad, and the ugly'. Had everything in it, even touched on the American civil war.

Brilliant Films, Packaging is Misleading Though
Anyone already considering this purchase will be well aware of the quality of the films and won't need me to tell them whether or not High Plains Drifter is a good movie. I DO have a small gripe that denies this purchase the full five stars (and in fairness it's a very particular and individual gripe which in all likelihood won't affect many in the slightest): At some stage, the packaging must have changed. Older customer reviews further down the page declare that each film is housed within its own individual case and, certainly, the packaging illustration depicts a big fat box which could indeed contain eight separate DVDs. That was a big "PLUS" for me because, nerd that I am, I prefer to place my DVDs/Blus alphabetically whenever possible in my collection, and in this instance I would have preferred to toss the box and separate the movies (I could also have immediately got rid of two of the enclosed movies which I already own on blu-ray). When it arrived though, the box is way thinner than the box pictured, and the discs are encased inside four super-thin cases, two films per case. Now, it's still the exact same discs, and I'm still, by and large, delighted with the purchase. And, well, I'll just keep them all together, as I've had to with a couple of other collected sets. Not a biggie, but I felt it worth mentioning since the set IS now different than that advertised, if only to a surface degree. Fantastic set of movies though, for sure. And at the price (£15 at the time of my purchase), it's almost rude NOT to pick this set up.

The films: Audio Tracks and Subtitles Available
A lot of good reviews have been written about this box set and I will not repeat all of that. Please refer to the other reviews if you need comments on the films (which, by the way, I find very interesting), etc. My main goal in posting this review is to provide complete information regarding the audio tracks and subtitles included in each film. One important thing to notice is that not all films have the same set of subtitles available. So, looking into each film : * The Beguiled Audio: English Subtitles: English SDH * High Planes Drifter Audio: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish Subtitles: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish * Breezy Audio: English Subtitles: English SDH * Joe Kidd Audio: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish Subtitles: Arabic, Danish, Dutch, English SDH,Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish * Coogan's Bluff Audio: English Subtitles: Arabic, Czech, English, Greek, Hungarian, Romanian, Turkish * Play Misty for Me Audio: English, French, German, Spanish Subtitles: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish * The Eiger Saction Audio: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish Subtitles: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish * Two Mules for Sister Sara Audio: English Subtitles: Arabic, Czech, English SDH, Greek, Hungarian, Romanian, Turkish I hope this helps!
