Orvis Encounter Fly Rod

Does the job

The rods been very good to me. It has covered several miles of creeks. The case is nice keeps the rod portable and protected when not in use. The reel is smooth and both rod amd reel has held up to several 4lbs large mouth bass that were caught when pan fishing. Its a great rod setup for beginners getting in as it has a fair price point, me is a 5wt I'll but another one in a 8wt for larger targets species. But the 5wt is a blast when fishing for pan fish. I'd say this rod is very durable and well though set for all around use

As a newcomer to the world of fly fishing, I chose the Orvis Encounter as my first fly rod combo purchase. This choice was not made lightly, but after narrowing it down to three contenders that were within my budget, the Orvis name and reputation won me over. While I've had this combo for only a week, I have been able to take it fishing and catch my first trout with it. The 8'6" 5wt was my choice, and the rod felt more than capable handling the catch. This is a 4-piece rod with dots to line up where each section connects. The reel seems to be made of a type of ABS plastic, but it is substantial, and I don't anticipate any issues with it. It also came preloaded with backing, fly line, and tippet. I'm happy with my purchase.

Solid gear! I used this outfit flossing sockeye salmon on the Kenia river in Alaska and it performed perfectly and handled the big 8-12 pound salmon with ease. The case is great and the reel drag works well and is big enough to handle a lot of backing and main line. I would highly recommend this rod combo for heavy duty fishing.

This fly setup is amazing for beginner’s, it is really durable, the case is very well made. The reel itself is plastic which I did not know, I was expecting aluminum but nonetheless it is still a really good reel. Sometimes the rod will come apart when using it, I am also not the best at fly fishing so maybe it is my fault and I am just too aggressive with it, but overall it is a really good setup and I would highly suggest to anyone looking into it. Orvis is a phenomenal brand.
