This does both. I’m a size 6 so opted for a medium as per the size guide and it’s fits perfectly. It’s a little awkward to get on at first, but loosen the laces and re-do them when on. The insert goes in front of your leg, not behind (oops) as I was first doing! The Velcro is strong so won’t come undone whilst running. It was also easy to wear over my sock and fitted into my trainer comfortably. I’ve only worn it on one short run, but so far I’m impressed. I wish it came with instructions on how to wash it though, as I’m a tad concerned about it getting smelly from being worn during my runs! Review: Gives good support and confidence - It took me a while to work out how to put the brace on as there were no instructions. However it does give good support once on. It takes a while but I think it will be worth it. I read on a health website that it is important to have a lace-up brace rather than an elasticated or Velcro one which do not give the same kind of support. After a sprained ankle I need to make sure I can wear shoes again without the risk of it giving way again. This brace gives me confidence to get out and about while it heals.I don't like the feel of the velcro straps under my foot but the brace does mean that I am totally unafraid that my ankle will go over again. It doesn't seem that well-made and might not last long considering it cost £20 but if it enables my ankle to get back to normal it will be worth it. None of my shoes seem to accommodate the brace; it's too bulky to fit inside comfortably.** A: I have to use my tennis shoes and lace them somewhat loosely. Would this brace work for something like that?** A: No. I've had to use this brace and similar for about 40 years now. I keeps your ankles relatively stable but the toes drop when just in your socks and brack (in fact, I broke my big toe doing martial arts while wearing a brace). Are you sure it's your ankle you want supported? In my opinion, my brace gave me such confidence, I truly FORGOT to make sure my toes were out of the way as well. **Q: Would this work well with running?** A: Yes. I run with my workouts 3 times a week and while it was never more than a couple miles I never had any issues. **Q: Do you have to bend your foot very much to get it on?** A: You have to really loosen the ties to get your foot in. You can do it with out bending your ankle but the ties have to be really loose. I sustained a fairly bad sprain a few weeks ago, a bad grade 2. Bought this a week after, as my ankle felt quite unstable as well as very painful. This brace has been an absolute Godsend. I thought the laces might be a bit of a faff, and it's true that they do slow down the putting on in the morning a little, but in fact the lacing means you get a really good custom fit. I can't imagine not using this style if needed in future. The non stretchy side straps give great stability. I'm really glad I bought this. A bit more than the basic cheap ankle supports available, but half the price of the big branded ones. Excellent value for what it's doing for me. I'll be wearing it for protection some time yet I think, for off road dog walking (which was where the sprain occurred, on uneven ground).
