Are the fins rubber or plastic please?

They are rubber. I would really recommend them.

I i usually take a size 6(39) should i purchase the medium or large (39-41) in these flippers

I would advise a medium being the best fit.

are they good for improving technique

There's a 2015 review of these fins by Laura Hamel in the online version of SWIMMER athttp://www.usmsswimmer.com/201507/swimbagfins2015.pdfThis review opines: "(Finis Floating Fins) have an excellent balance of flexibility and stiffness and cater to a range of abilities and kicking techniques and drills." On the more general point of long-bladed fins, the article says: "Many coaches like long-bladed fins for beginning swimmers and triathletes and for longer sets that focus on kicking technique. The longer blades slow down the kick and immediately impart a sense of confidence and some real propulsion, allowing newer swimmers to work on specific technique. More important, they encourage toe pointing and ankle flexibility, which is often poor in athletes coming from running and cycling backgrounds and in new swimmers who haven't yet honed their technique."I use my Finis Floating Fins for sea snorkelling.
