Can duty free be applied since i am taking it abroad?

If you are buying through amazon in the uk you will already have paid duty on this product (vat @ 20%) so taking out of uk should be ok but depending on where you are taking it and how your transporting it there the weight may cost you if using transport I.e. plane hope this helps!

Are the smaller speakers supplied with cables. can this be connected to tv using what type of cable. does it play dvds or you need an ext player?

I use Bluetooth for connection but it also has ARC HDMI connector, you can connect with HDMI cable

Are the small speakers portable so could leave the main unit in the house and small speakers outside?

There is a wire connection between the 2 smaller speakers and the main unit. So you can't really separate them.
