## Description

Say hello to the newest member of Nooelec's popular NESDR SDR-range, the NESDR Mini 2. The Mini 2 uses a brand-new tuner IC, the R820T2 made by Rafael Micro, to provide increased sensitivity and improved SNR. A greatly-improved telescopic metal antenna is also included with your SDR set at no extra charge. If you liked the NESDR Mini, you will love the NESDR Mini 2! The perfect device for learning software defined radio, on the cheap. Amateur radio, ADS-B, police & fire scanning, trunking, satellite images--you name it, this little guy can probably do it. Outperforms many devices 10x its cost! This custom Nooelec SDR is a modified DVB-T USB dongle tuned for SDR usage, including upgraded crystal, capacitors and inductors compared to generic devices. Full compatibility with a large array of software packages, such as MATLAB, HDSDR, SDR Touch, SDR#, Planeplotter--too many to list. MathWorks and NooelecTM have coordinated to bring MATLAB support for our SDR receivers. The RTL-SDR radio support package enables you to design wireless receivers using real world signals. Using Communications System ToolboxTM in conjunction with an RTL-SDR USB radio, you can design and prototype systems that process real-time wireless signals in MATLAB and Simulink These units are based on the R820T2 tuner IC made by Rafael Micro. As such, they have a frequency capability of approximately 25MHz-1750MHz. There is also an RTL2832U IC on board of course, which acts as the demodulator and USB interface. Interested in frequencies below 25MHz? We recommend you take a look at our Ham It Up upconverter, which will let you listen all the way down to 100kHz or lower with impeccable sensitivity. The connector type on the SDR in female MCX, and on the antenna, male MCX. There are plenty of adapter and adapter cables available in our store if you want to connect your favorite antenna!

Review: Works! versatile and fun. - In summary, these SDRs are superb device for Radio beginners, discrete projects and for experimentation. They are very easy to set up and get immediate gratification but complex enough to become a life long obsession too. I have been a licensed Radio Ham since I was a kid and also love programming and hacking but have resisted the SDR craze of the last few years mostly due to ongoing projects and a busy life. I bought one of these as an impulse and it sat around for a month before I had a project for it. Having been woken several times by fast jet noise I was curious if this device would let me see who was up there. So I make an ADS-B receiver out of an old Pi Zero and this Newlec dongle. The project took about an hour from the first search on Google for drivers/software to having a working ADS-B receiver. So very easy, it turns out the RAF Typhoons have been active around here (go get 'em boys!). What a great little project for kids - easy and satisfying. I also used the available software from Newlec on my Windows 10 machine. Suffice to say the install was easy and the software gave immediate results - from listening to Radio 4, my local repeater, ATC, Marine and ADS-B. Luckily, I managed to make the Pi ADS-B receiver and stick it in the loft before getting too far into using the dongle as a frequency agile receiver - I would have enjoyed wasting far too much time. I won't try and quantify the sensitivity or selectivity of the radio beyond saying, with the Newlec software, they are adequate for most tasks. Now I know what the fast jet noise is I really don't need an ADS-B rx anymore (not my interest really) so I do plan to write some software so I can "detect" the ISS (via it's APRS beacons) and optimise chances of seeing it wizing overhead. I might also buy another dongle for Meteo reception. While results are immediate and easy you also have quite low level access to the device so there is an almost inexhaustible learning curve available to you. The dongles do require a good power supply - probably not an issue if using a powered hub or modern desktop. I did have grey outs on the Pi which just required a better power supply. I also find the dongle does require a bit more processor power than a pi B / Pi Zero can provide. The load averages of the pi running the ADS-b (Pi Zero) Rx were about 80% when running nothing else and with a chopped down image. While I still prefer 'old style' radio I can not fault these devices and they will open up a lot of fun without spending huge money and traditional radio gear.
Review: Great For Tracking Aircraft - This is a great piece of kit, it doesn't come with instructions but youtube has multiple videos on this piece which is a massive help to get it up and running with what ever you want to do. So far I tried tracking aircraft and so far it can pick up signal from aircraft at 37,000 feet (the highest aircraft I have seen) and it also covers a radius of about 80km, I had it set up inside and I didn't really have it by the window and there is a few blind spots for the line of sight around my house, but it didn't matter it still picked up the aircraft. I hope to upgrade the ariel soon to get more out of it but I was very suprised with this, its well worth it's price tag if not more.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What software would i need to listen to atc?**
A: ATC still uses good old fashioned AM transmission so you do not need any special decoding software; whichever of the SDR software products you use to make your NESDR Mini work should be sufficient. I use SDR#. I am not sure if SDR# is still available for download from the Nooelec site, if not try the AirSpy site.In the UK civil ATC frequencies start around 118.025 MHz and go up in 0.025MHz increments to about 136.80MHz. Unless you are close to an airport or ATC center you will probably only hear the aircraft side of the conversation. To find out which ground station an aircraft is talking to, you will need an airband guidebook several of which are available from Amazon. See also my earlier help note for the NESDR Mini concerning antennas; the small telescopic that comes with NESDR Mini is inadequate for anything other than public broadcast reception. Hope this helps.

**Q: Does the antenna attach directly to the usb dongle (i can't see anywhere to connect it in the images) or do i need something else?**
A: Yes, the antenna attaches directly to the USB dongle The dongle has a female MCX connector on a side that is not shown on the images for this listing, and the antenna has a male MCX connector on the end of the lead. You don't need anything else.
If you search for Nooelec NESDR on Amazon, you will find a listing for the same dongle that has pictures that show where the antenna connection socket is.
Beware that these dongles get quite hot during operation, which is why they have a relatively short life. I have had several Nooelec dongles over 15 years, and none of them has lasted more than three years. One only Nooelec dongle of a different design in a metal case got even hotter and lasted only15 months. Unfortunately, in the consumer price range, no manufacturer seems to have come up with a solution to the overheating degrading the internal electronics problem!

**Q: does it work with macbook pro?**
A: Yes, OS X is supported. Thanks!

**Q: Can you use it for Baofeng UV-5R?**
A: Your question makes no sense.........it is a standalone radio reciever used on a PC, and not used with a Baofeng radio, they are seperate devices

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great little device
*by S***E on 2 December 2017*

Bought one of these a few years back and forgot to review it. For what it is, and what it does, and for the price, it's a brilliant little piece of kit for geeks and nerds so it sat very well on me!! Haven't used it just lately because other things got in the way, but I was happily sat there for hours on end scanning through frequencies for east midlands airport when first purchased. Just the ability to do that kind of stuff is worth the money and can burn up hours of your time if your into this stuff. There are other much more creative ways you can use a device like this for. I wanted to get into building a radio telescope with one to see if it was possible. Point being, a little device like this will keep you busy for hours and fire your imagination. Just dont let life get in the way and spoil it!
