The layer in between is a mesh compartment that separates the top and bottom half. The bottom half is around 28” long and about 14” wide. The lower compartment is about 5”deep before the upper compartment which is another 6” or so. All in all there is a lot of room in it more than most suitcases the same size. **Q: Is the 35" version too big to be considered "standard luggage" with an airline?** A: This bag is NOT 62"! It is 34.5" to 35" long (not including the handle), by 16" by 14". That is at least 2.5" over the 62" limit for many flights, which is what I purchased it for. As mentioned in other answers, many domestic airport personnel will ignore small size overages. HOWEVER, when you return, the international airports are much stricter, and you might be subject to massive oversize fees.
