Can i connext this straight to my boat battery

Yes, you can connect this direct to battery (assuming it is the normal 12 volt system). A suitable power lead is supllied with the unit. Peter, Hamble Marine.

does this have its own builtin rechargeable battery or is this a separate purchase as i do not have a 12vo;t battery in my boat

You will need a separate power source. If your boat has any other instruments e.g. outboard engine starter motor, or VHF that requires 12 volt battery you can connect your GARMIN to the Sam'a battery. Otherwise you need to buy one. Such batteries also need recharging at least once a month even if you don't use them. I charge mine at least every ten days. Good luck with finding lots of fish.

is this unit rain proof, thanks

Yes, it is rain proof. It is protected with ipx7 ipx7 Suitable:SplashesRain or SnowShoweringIncidental exposure to water of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
