The hole in the top is pretty generic **Q: Need to know the level in 500 ltr heating oil tank how does this work ?** A: Measure the depth of your tank as the one you are looking at is for 6ft high tank which is unlikely correct if your tank only takes 500L (more likely 4ft). You really need the gauge that is inline with the height of your tank, otherwise you have to fiddle with it to get it right. It works by simply screwing the new gauge cap into the top of the tank and the float attached will drop into the oil wherever it is in the tank. As the float drops the dial on the gauge will reduce from full to whatever the oil level is. They work very well, as long as you buy the one that is for your height of tanks. Note: If your oil tank is in a very exposed position and it gets battered by the weather, they only last a year or two… **Q: does not fit as different size for replacing existing watchman device which lacks accuracy** A: These floats come in different sizes so measure tank depth before buying. Tanks sometimes come with different width fittings but there is an extra piece which enables correct fitting.
