The progression of grits works well, and the 12,000 grit finishing belt can leave a seriously refined edge if your technique is good. I’ve been able to get knives to a true hair-whittling sharp edge with this system, especially when paired with the Blade Grinder attachment and proper belt progression. The factory belts are designed specifically for the system and seem to give more predictable results than trying to cheap out with off-brand options. The kit includes five 1" × 18" belts with grits ranging from extra coarse through ultra-fine polishing. One thing I’ve learned: once you get comfortable with the Blade Grinder attachment, it’s hard to go back to guided systems because this is simply faster and more consistent for getting an extremely sharp edge. That said, belt life will depend a lot on steel type and how aggressive you are — if you’re reprofiling hard steels, expect to go through coarse belts quicker. **Q: What is the lifespan for these?  How many times can a block of seven kitchen knives (for example) be sharpened, before needing to be replaced?**
A: They are good quality belts in my opinion, but you're asking a question not easily answered. Did the block of seven knives just slice 5 tomatoes each or were they used on an infomercial where they cut a boot in half then sliced 5 tomatoes? How dull and or damaged they are directly affects belt life proportionally. Duller they are the more wear you put on a belt to sharpen but I would approximate 50-100 knife sharpenings per set

A: Yes, this is the 1" x 18" belt that only works with the blade grinding attachment (WSSAKO81112) as pictured on the box.  The stated dimensions are 1" x 9.25" which is correct for an 18" belt (9" each side).  The regular Ken Onion sharpening attachment uses shorter belts.

**Q: Are these OEM or aftermarket?**
A: Our abrasive belts are not OEM.  They are sourced in custom sizes just for our sharpeners.  We do not make the abrasive itself, but they are not available anywhere else in these sizes.  Our belts are manufactured to be fast cutting as well as cool cutting, meaning they will not overheat the blade, a unique combination. If you’re running the Ken Onion Blade Grinder Attachment, these replacement belts are absolutely worth keeping around.
