How can you be sure this is making good contact with the drive?

We provide the 4 thermal pads with 2 different sizes and thicknesses to make sure that fits all kinds of SSDs. If your SSD is flat, a large thermal pad surely would make a good contact with the heatsink. If your SSD is not flat due to its controller, dram and flash chips, we suggest that you could use small pieces of thermal pads to stick on chips where the heat comes from. That would make the sources of heat touches the heatsink evenly and conducts heat fast.

Kingston Fury Renegade - order with the Heat Dissipation with Heat Pipe Cooler and Aluminum Fin? Release hot air - correct product? Thanks.

Yes, it could be used with Kingston Fury Renegade Heat spreader edition but not Heatsink edition.

What is the width and length of the bottom that holds the heatpipe, not the entire heatsink?

It is around 4.1 x 0.9 inches (10.5 x 2.3 cm).

Are there any ssds this won't work with?

This PS5 SSD heatsink works with most of M.2 SSDs except those SSDs with their own heatsinks already.
