Why is the black one so much bigger then the white one?

You can order this items in different sizes depending your barrel, it can be regular barrel or bull barrel... I hope this answers your question.

Where does best position seem to be on this product? I think I will give them a try. Thanks.

I have had the best luck splitting the difference from the end of the barrel to the end to the end of the forearm that's that's where I started on my rifle and that's where they stayed on both of my rifles but remember all rifles are different

Will this harm the bluing?

No, it shouldn't harm the blueing if you selected the proper size and follow the installation instructions.
