Question 1

Can Petoskey stones be tumbled?

Accepted Answer

Petosky stones are best polished by hand, using increasingly finer grits of sandpaper. You can then rub a small amount of TurtleWax car polish on it with a soft cloth, piece of denim or piece of leather. Or you can spray them with a clear acrylic sealer. Harder stones are best for tumblers. And use similar hardness of stones in each batch (like one batch mostly agates or jaspers, etc.). Too soft of stones mixed with harder ones can cause the smaller stones to break down into tiny pieces instead of polish. If you're new to rock tumbling, look up the Moh's Hardness Scale if you know the type of rock you are tumbling (quick general is that agates are not see through or translucent, while jaspers, quartz, etc IS translucent (light can pass through).
