The type of cartridge is what you need to determine first - moving magnet phono cartridges are very common and have a replaceable stylus. Moving coil cartridges are a bit less common and usually have a fixed stylus. I have a Sony turntable which came with no cartridge. I had to purchase it separately. I would suggest that you look at the cartridge carefully and see if you can determine the brand and perhaps the model number. You can then look up the cartridge online and get the specs which should indicate the type of cartridge (moving magnet vs moving coil). This particular preamp works very well with the mm type cartridge. I have had no complaints. I suppose some of the more hard-core "audiophile" persons may disagree.
