Improve your ability to develop, manage, and troubleshoot SQL Server solutions by learning how different components work “under the hood,” and how they communicate with each other. The detailed knowledge helps in implementing and maintaining high-throughput databases critical to your business and its customers. You’ll learn how to identify the root cause of each problem and understand how different design and implementation decisions affect performance of your systems. New in this second edition is coverage of SQL Server 2016 Internals, including In-Memory OLTP, columnstore enhancements, Operational Analytics support, Query Store, JSON, temporal tables, stretch databases, security features, and other improvements in the new SQL Server version. The knowledge also can be applied to Microsoft Azure SQL Databases that share the same code with SQL Server 2016. Pro SQL Server Internals is a book for developers and database administrators, and it covers multiple SQL Server versions starting with SQL Server 2005 and going all the way up to the recently released SQL Server 2016. The book provides a solid road map for understanding the depth and power of the SQL Server database server and teaches how to get the most from the platform and keep your databases running at the level needed to support your business. The book: • Provides detailed knowledge of new SQL Server 2016 features and enhancements • Includes revamped coverage of columnstore indexes and In-Memory OLTP • Covers indexing and transaction strategies • Shows how various database objects and technologies are implemented internally, and when they should or should not be used • Demonstrates how SQL Server executes queries and works with data and transaction log What You Will Learn Design and develop database solutions with SQL Server. Troubleshoot design, concurrency, and performance issues. Choose the right database objects and technologies for the job. Reduce costs and improve availability and manageability. Design disaster recovery and high-availability strategies. Improve performance of OLTP and data warehouse systems through in-memory OLTP and Columnstore indexes. Who This Book Is For Developers and database administrators who want to design, develop, and maintain systems in a way that gets the most from SQL Server. This book is an excellent choice for people who prefer to understand and fix the root cause of a problem rather than applying a 'band aid' to it. Review: Way Under the Hood - Assumes No Prior Knowledge - Great Book - Fantastic book on the storage and performance internals of SQL Server. Don't expect tips on administration best practices or T-SQL features for developers. However, if you want to understand how SQL Server is really working all the way up to 2016, this is a great book. However, grasping the concepts in this book *will* allow you design better performing databases and write more efficient queries. Would highly recommend for anyone doing database development or administration on SQL Server, particularly with the recent updates to features such as ColumnStore indexes, which really change the storage mode of the table. Review: This is a GEM! - This is an incredible book on SQLServer Internals! Any DBA should have this gem on their shelf. There are several great examples and scripts to bring over to your toolbox. I really enjoyed the explanations, examples and scripts to see for yourself. Grab this book and get a much better example of how things work under the covers.

Very in-depth book that explains the "why" behind many things ...
Very in-depth book that explains the "why" behind many things. I had my MCSA: SQL Server 2012/2014 before reading this, and I'm still learning a ton from it. There are lots of code examples and comparative benchmarks for different approaches, which is extremely helpful.

This is THE # 1 reference book when it comes to expert-level SQL Server training.
I used this book to study for my Microsoft MCSA 70-762 exam for SQL Server, and I don't think I would've passed the test without it. This was, by far, the most helpful book in all of my dozens of study materials for that beast of an exam. This is NOT light reading, and it is NOT a book for beginners. It dives into very, very deep topics. An advanced level of knowledge and experience with SQL Server is definitely a prerequisite for this book.

Full stars for the book, none for the delivery
Contents of the book is good and as expected. The book arrived damaged, delivered by the worst courier company in Australia: Couriers Please. I've had numerous issues with deliveries from them before, and have complained about them to Amazon, who for reasons unknown to me keep using them. Book was clearly dropped on its spine, possibly multiple times. The flimsy envelope it came in was torn from the impact. Courier did not knock, we only knew it was delivered from the popup on the app.
