A macaron is the French almond meringue sandwich with a smooth shell, soft center and buttercream or ganache filling. A macaroon is coconut based and baked often covered or drizzled in chocolate. They sound similar but they are very different little sweets. So I was glad to finally get to try actual Macarons. These were a little on the small side, but I was trying to find a lower price variety and these were exactly that. You could taste each distinct flavor variation in this assortment which was very nice. I read some other reviews where they mentioned the different colors all tasted the same from other brands. Not these. These had very defined flavors and the quality was good. They are enclosed in a durable plastic shell to protect them in shipping and even shipped with an ice pack to keep them fresh and from melting so the freshness was good when I ate them. In comparison these were a good value for the money but pretty expensive compared to basic cookies or those dreaded macaroons. I wish I knew what all these flavors were. Macaron Centrale claims to have over 200 tantalizing flavors but I was not sure what some of the flavor were when I ate them. Like the orange one was obvious then the chocolate filling one was a strong mocha and coffee flavor but that purple one. What was that? I disliked it the most but also found it the most intriguing as what was that? Lilac Licorice? Total novelty purchase but I will consider it again as would make an interesting gift. First time, they weren't bad for the price. This time, they were a waste of money. I'm not sure what changed. They are different colors, but I've tried four and could not recognize the flavor. They all tasted the same, and that flavor was not good. Someone else mentioned they tasted like "perfume," and yes, I'd agree that weird scent and taste were more like flowers than actual foods. I experienced some of the same things other reviewers mentioned: oily, texture is wrong for a macaroon, odd and unpleasant taste, and delivered in 90 degree heat without an ice pack.
