Brown Mulch Dye 1 Gallon

Really liking this mulch color so far! PROS: - It's vibrant. It's brighter and seems to stay red longer than actual red mulch you buy at the store (which faded faster under the direct sunlight and rain). - So far, it's held up well through rain. No color running that I've noticed (with that being said, make sure you plan a day where there will be no rain for at LEAST 24 hours. 48 is even better). - I had no trouble mixing this and spraying it (with a standard sprayer that you would usually use for pesticides or weed killer - with that being said, because it's a 'paint', despite being mixed with water, you'll still need to clean the sprayer well, or it clogs.) - Please see the attached pic, my yard had grayed out mulch (that used to be 'cedar' colored.) I've had quite a few neighbors already tell me how much better it looks. My yard is still under construction, but this seriously made it pop and look beautiful! (You'll also notice that I got a little lazy and sprayed over some leaves as well, while doing the yard, hah). CONS: - Very messy clean up. You'll need to have a dirt area (NOT concrete - it stains fast) where you can rinse out the sprayer. Red colored solution will run for awhile before turning clear. Wear clothes that can get messy. It will stain. - You'll want to make a couple passes over mulch (at least). If anyone steps on the mulch and lifts wood pieces, the old faded color is instantly noticeable against the red. I highly recommend spraying a coat, waiting a few days, then spraying a second. This helps coat more angles of each 'wood chunk' of mulch. Overall, I'm very happy with the results! My front yard has a LOT of mulch - both sides of the sidewalk have mulch instead of grass too. And so far I've only needed 2 bottles of this product (1 which is still nearly full). THis is going over with 2 coats too. It goes a long way. PICTURE 1: Front yard with 2 coats. PICTURE 2: before and after color, to give you an idea of what I started working with. There is only a fast, once-over of red mulch spray. The end result looks much better after 2 full coats were done.

Just finished using this, and thinking about the review as I went along. I'm giving it 5 stars, because it worked as advertised, but I have a few caveats. First, as mentioned, I just finished using it, and it looks great right now, but if it fades immediately, I would downgrade this. As an aside, the container was smaller than I thought. It's one quart, not a gallon (and says that if you pay attention), but it covered what I needed covered. Obviously this does not replace mulch, which has many benefits, like weed control, water retention, soil cultivation. Also, you are just spraying the top side, so if you have lots of kids or animals or other things that are turning over the mulch, it will look faded quickly. I put on mulch about every other year. I order 5 yards, which seems to be enough to make about 100 wheelbarrow trips on a hot Saturday, and is a generally unpleasant job. Since I just did this last year, and have more than enough mulch down right now, but just wanted it to look better, I thought I would give this a shot. I took a rake and fist turned over the mulch for a bit, and pulled any big weeds. I hosed down areas that I didn't want to get colored, like walls, sidewalks, and plants. I used a new pump sprayer - spring for a new one and then just dedicate it to this job. You are going to be pumping gallons of dye through this thing, and it's never going to be the same, so just use it for this task. They're cheap. As a general note, you are essentially getting 32 ounces worth of dye, and should take obvious precautions, like wearing clothes that can get stains, and gloves, and keep the hose handy for any drips that you want to quickly spray. I only got one big drip on the concrete, but the hose quickly removed it. I went over everything twice, since it will absorb, and like any painting job (which this essentially is) the first coat never looks great. Good marketing that they have 'enviro' in the name, BTW, since it will feel anything but positive for the enviro as you stand in the middle of your yard and paint your mulch, but at least you can tell any noisy neighbors how the product has 'enviro' in the name. So, my mulch looks great now- it has that sharp black and green contrast between the mulch and the plants again. I also have some left over, which will come in handy to use a few days before we have a party or something. If you don't have a day and hundreds of dollars to dedicate to freshening up the mulch beds this year, but you do have an hour or so after work and $25 bucks, this is a good way to go.

This mulch color is very pretty because it is a rich deep darkish red, not a bright red -- like Santa's suit. However, the color fades, just like the color on bags of new mulch that you purchase. The color lasts well for, perhaps, three or four months, depending on the number of rains that occur. This dye might refresh the appearance of the mulch you already have, thereby saving you from having to purchase new mulch so soon simply because yours is faded. The recipe for use is simple, and very little of the product is needed -- It goes a long way. I have used it on both woodchip mulch and on pine straw mulch, and I was please with the result. I sprayed only the top surface, but that was fine.

I read many of the reviews prior to my purchase. First, it does exactly what I wanted it to do...color some gray mulch to match some new dark brown mulch. I had a choice of buying approximately 40 bags of mulch (Cost of $80-$150 depending on sale/brand) or give this product a try. Well I am extremely satisfied with how this EnviroColor looks and also matches the surrounding new dark brown mulch. Based on other reviews, I expect it to fade at a similar rate to the new mulch. My only issue is that my 1 gallon pump sprayer repeatedly clogged. I have a RoundUp sprayer, which is not high-end, but not cheap either. I sprayed my first 100 sq ft with no issue but then got clogged every 25-50 sq ft until I finished my approx 1000 sq ft. I found that removing the nozzle and spraying it vigorously with water from the hose was effective. I also found that using no more than 3 oz of colorant per gallon was adequate and prevented more frequent clogging. Coverage was as anticipated. Keeping pressure high in your sprayer and frequently shaking/agitating the mixture was key. To emphasize, other reviews: This colorant does indeed stain everything (wear old clothes/gloves). Took some time due to the frequent clogging but very happy with end result and cash savings. Check out my photos. The entire area around the tree is Envirocolor. The area around the shrubs/bushes is new mulch. Relatively difficult to notice where the new mulch ends and EnviroColore begins, in my opinion.

Each year I spread over 30 yards of mulch and it is just too much work, not to mention expensive. I read the reviews for mulch dye and the Enviro Color dye had the best reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. Several reviews mentioned problems with clogged sprayers so I invested in a good quality battery powered sprayer (which I love!!) and used the fan shaped spray nozzle. I had no problems with clogging. I used about 1/3 of the bottle for 4 gallons of water which left me with a nice deep, even color. Any less than that and it will be too light and diluted. Spray each area twice, slowly once and back, and it should come out pretty even. Touch ups are easy. I tried it on a smaller bed first and we had an unexpected heavy rain storm that night - the color held up well and didn't run, though I did touch it up a little because I didn't use enough dye the first time. By the time I got to the next bed, I had my spray rate down and had figured out that you really need to use a lot more of the dye than they tell you to. So buy extra. One draw back is that only the top of the mulch is dyed so if you or your dog walk in the bed and mess up the mulch, you will have lighter spots. That wasn't a big deal for me, I have a number of very large beds and even with doing the occasional touch ups, it is SO much easier than spreading new mulch. As for cleaning up, its pretty easy. Just be sure to do it on the grass away from anything you care about, take a hose and fill the sprayer and then just spray out the water to clean out your wand and rinse out the sprayer a few times. I did have some over spray on my concrete drive way but a little bleach and it came out. Wear old shoes, gloves and old clothes. Overall, I am very pleased with this product.

The product did what I wanted and the mulch looks nice. However it did clog my sprayer to the extent it has to be replaced.

I’m always looking to save money, limit unnecessary efforts, and to press the easy amazon button (so satisfying and addictive). I was recently at my local lawn and garden store picking up mulch for the front beds and shocked at the sticker price of some dyed chopped up wood. I remembered my research from last year about this product and thought I could forgo a few bags to purchase a bottle and sprayer. Once received I was cautious in mixing as this stuff will truly mess up those new Nikes or that favorite shirt you picked up during that concert that you vaguely remember in the 90’s. Truth be told I didn’t really measure the amount as I just pored the mixture in like a seasoned intoxicated chef knowing more is absolutely better (could you imagine running inside and grabbing one of the measuring cups out of the drawer for this? I would be back on Amazon replacing with a far more expensive one if I was caught by my wife). I began spraying my old brown mulch with the black dye and was shocked in the instant results. The instant gratification and the one victory of which usually amounts to another stupid purchase that my wife will consistently remind me of, resulted in a super bowl win and a “check this out, told ya it would work”. Four gallons later and unmeasured contents and my yard looks like new money though I need to get a few more bags of mulch to freshen up a few spots where the kids and dog have kicked the mulch out of the bed. You will need to reapply through the season as the kids, dog, and yard rats (Squirrels) move the mulch around exposing the unsightly layers of old mulch. For the ones asking about rain don’t worry. I’ve been through a few storms already and it seems to hold up fine. You must remember even the stuff you buy at the store will fade and reapplying is ok with me given the price and appearance. Great purchase and would highly recommend. (Note: You may want to run a rake through your beds to give a fresh appearance prior to applying dye.)

This is a product that really works. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to cut back on the physical labor and cost of spreading new mulch.

Works great. Easy to use. Lasts well

Looks nice when applied but awkward to apply. Die stains anything . Advised to wet area not being covered by spray , liquid is somewhat thick so it causes issues with sprayer clogging , dripping from tip . Always have to be aware of where tip is .

It's a much smaller bottle than I expected but works really well.

bought this product as an experiment to try and spruce up our washed out coarse mulch. It looks really good as most people have said. Not sure on longevity yet as its only been a couple weeks but it has seen rain and looks fine. As others have said it can get messy so take as much care as possible as the nozzle will get drippy and you might find the spray line plugs up now and then.

Works just the pictures show. Really refreshed the mulch in late July when you don't notice how faded it has already gotten. Easy to use and get deal.
