Will this work on an old drain pipe with a 2 1/2 inch inside diameter pipe?

No, this would not fit on a 2.5 inside diameter.

Does it work in a shower drain without a p trap?

My guess is that it should work in your shower drain. A P-trap prevents sewer gasses from entering the home. When full of water it is nothing more than a drain. Give it a try - can;t hurt. VERY pleased with the performance of our seal!
