## Description

Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer has resigned his throne and retired to the City of Angels, where he is indulging in a few of his favorite things — wine, women, song. When a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered before his eyes, he feels something awaken deep within him – for the first time in roughly 10 billion years. Is he actually capable of feelings for a human being? The very thought disturbs him — as well as his best friend and confidante, Mazikeen (aka Maze), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Dancer, who finds herself both repulsed and fascinated by Lucifer. As they work together to solve the murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness. Used to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, he begins to wonder if there’s hope yet. Maybe everyone’s got a chance for redemption. Even the Devil.

Review: Enjoyable and often humorous with a very charming Lucifer - I started watching Lucifer late last summer on Hulu and enjoyed it so much I binge watched the first seven episodes in one sitting, then saw the last six the following night, and then ordered it on Blu Ray here on desertcart. It was not what I expected at all: a handsome, dashing, somewhat charming, often witty Lucifer trying to understand what his new emotions mean - often with funny results - as he becomes fascinated with helping a lovely LAPD homicide detective Chloe Decker, who is immune to Lucifer's usually very persuasive immortal charms, solve her cases to ensure the wicked topside here on earth get punished. He is also fascinated as to why Decker can resist him and why he appears to becoming mortal at times. He keeps dealing with his angelic brother Amenadiel, who is determined to get him back to Hell even if he has to become a villain to try to accomplish it. Lucifer tells everyone who he is but, of course, no one believes him. Lucifer also protests that humanity has things wrong about him: that he never wanted to hurt anyone, only in Hell was he a punisher of the evil human sent there, that he never came topside to influence anyone to commit bad deeds, which is why he now enjoys helping Decker go after criminals. He laments his father's - the Almighty's - extreme punishment of him when he rebelled ions ago and then was left to rot as Lord of Hell for eternity. The show is very loosely based on the D.C. Comics Lucifer - mostly inspired by it - but wants to focus on Lucifer interaction in the mortal world of Los Angeles where he now r sides as a playboy and very successful night club owner: Lux. The theme of the show is whether he's redeemable, can he eventually become angelic again (early in the first season it's revealed he had his angel wings cut off right after arriving in LA five years earlier in dramatic rebellion or rejection of his former life), does he even want to, etc. British actor Tom Ellison nails it in the title role (his parents and some close relatives are Baptist ministers who are fine with this) as he displays a wide range of emotions as Lucifer grows and learns about his newly found emotions and tries to understand humanity, but is often baffled by it. The whole cast is very good and usually makes the show work even on weaker episodes. This is not a heavy, dark show despite the weekly homicide case or who Lucifer used to be. There are always humorous situations and some witty dialogue in each episode. Lucifer has layers which get peeled back as the show progresses. (The 18 episode second season is even stronger than the first as Lucifer's mother escaped from Hell and is determined to return to Heaven with Lucifer, who doesn't want to go, and his brother. Season 2 will be out on DVD and Blu-Ray in August 2017.) But the 13 episode first season really sets things up nicely and shows Lucifer is more his own man. This version of Lucifer is very loosely based (mostly inspired by) on the DC comic character who appears in the Sandman and Lucifer comics. Again, the show has a surprising amount of humor in most episodes which is why Fox network labels it as a comedy drama.
Review: “You make a mockery of everything divine.” “Thank you.” - Lucifer Morningstar has grown tired of “playing a part in his father’s play” and left hell to “vacation” in the mortal world. Now amusingly set up in the City of Angels as the owner of an exclusive nightclub, his adventures of indulgence are about to be interrupted by a callback to his old duties: a murderer needs to be punished. Lucifer starts with the general idea of the DC comic of the same name and immediately breaks off into different territory. While it’s debatable if a more “faithful” adaptation would have been suitable and/or better for a tv series, what’s here works surprisingly well. Tom Ellis is a delightfully playful Lucifer, which anchors the show excellently. He’s charismatic and a horrible influence at the same time and wrapped up in a thoroughly amusing bundle, but still conveys a curiosity and internal conflict that shows room for growth. And of course equally important to the part is his phenomenal ability to really channel anger, rage, and a dangerous edge convincingly when needed. The writers balance Lucifer’s unusual partnership with a local homicide detective and the associated crime of the week structure with a strong overarching story that shows real character development and intrigue over the course of the season. The mythology is carefully built and slowly revealed in bits and pieces. Lucifer is given depth of character, along with legitimate gripes with his former life that underlie his issues and actions, that adds layers and plenty of themes and dilemmas for the viewer to get caught up in to the show. Like the approach, the series’ success is two-fold. The individual episodes stand well as isolated stories, providing decent mysteries and reasonably accessible points of introduction. But beyond that is an amazing cast inhabiting compelling characters caught in the ripple effects of Lucifer’s actions and their consequences. The acting, atmosphere, and little dramatic touches combine to make the first season of Lucifer an engaging journey that feels complete yet ends with a big development that will no doubt echo through season 2. This certainly is not the Vertigo comic of the same name, but anyone willing to go along in the direction this series takes the same core concept will find a dark, intriguing, and yes, entertaining journey. This show features the devil himself consider his morality, which is a philosophical avenue well worth exploring.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The devil , but a very nice guy
*by W***R on August 31, 2017*

This is a series which is depressing at times but it also helps to sort out our own beliefs about sin and the devil, as well as God and angels. When Lucifer rails against the silly interpretations of the devil and the fact that we blame him for our own bad behavior, it is very funny. It is also very human to blame others for mistakes we make and sins we commit and the devil is as good as any other to blame so that we don't have to take responsibility. But this series is not always a comedy - all the emotions have their part to play in the stories. Which leads me to Lucifer's therapist. I am a therapist myself and of course the code of ethics of counselors and therapists would not allow some of her behavior and she would lose her license. However, her actual work in sessions with Lucifer is very good, leading me to suspect that the writer has been to therapy or has a consultant who is a good counselor. And so I love the therapist character and I like the fact that not only Lucifer but Maze, Amenadiel and even 'mom' have to talk to her at one time or another. I also love the fact that Lucifer cannot lie and so he tells everyone he is the devil and they don't believe him. I love the soul searching Lucifer does about his relationship with his father (the actor who eventually plays the 'father' is excellent - I'd like to see him show up again) since many of us question our relationship with God and whether God loves us. The story arc about Lucifer's mother, turns out to be thought-provoking too, although I don't think we have a goddess in the religious traditions that call the devil Lucifer. This 'Mom' is manipulative, pretty self-centered and you never can tell when she is lying or not, the real-life experience of some people with their mothers. But since this is a show that takes itself fairly lightly, we flow along with 'mom' as well as Amenadiel, a character I also like - someone who does the wrong thing to get the right thing done and then regrets it for the rest of his life. For me this show is not just a quirky police procedural, but a challenge to compare the writers' ideas with my own. So now I own the first two seasons and am looking forward to where the third will go.
