For an average size athletic 8 year old boy, should I get this one or the Maverick?

Got for my 9 year old and they are perfect

Would it be too large for 9-10 yrs old who are 4ft even?

No, not at all! It is adjustable so you can fit it for his size.

What is the benefit of the arm rest vs just the handle? Does it really aid in balance or just for comfort?

It goes behind your shoulder so it does help your balance, especially when first starting out.

Do these stilts come in manufacturer's packaging? I just received a bunch of parts in a generic Amazon box. No instructions or anything!

Mine came with instructions. Fairly easy to assemble.
