I bought this out of curiosity since I am mostly a jazz pianist. I like gospel music, but only in small doses. This book has a lot more going for it than just gospel piano (some of which is rather difficult to play properly). It also has some great ideas and tips for piano playing in general with an emphasis on harmonic devices. The attached CD is also very good, indeed essential for really grasping the feel of gospel piano. Highly recommended.

This book is a masterwork of teaching on gospel piano. Be warned, it presumes the reader is not a complete beginner at the keyboard. But for those who can read sheet music, it opens up the world of gospel piano in a very systematic and organized way. The author has a very solid understanding of music theory and explains the examples in great detail. More importantly, the author takes relatively complex harmonic textures and shows how to think about them in much simpler ways that allows the reader to improvise and create their own gospel patterns. I knew very little about gospel piano before buying this book, and I now that I'm at the end of the book, I really have a good sense for the techniques that make the style. The best part is that a lot of these techniques are similar to R&B, pop, and rock piano techniques, so it's a great training for anyone wanting to learn how to play in a various contemporary keyboard styles.
