Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Through Contrology you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities. This true rhythm and control is observed both in domestic pets and wild animals —without known exceptions. Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit. In childhood, with rare exceptions, we all enjoy the benefits of natural and normal physical development. However, as we mature, we find ourselves living in bodies not always complimentary to our ego. Our bodies are slumped, our shoulders are stooped, our eyes are hollow, our muscles are flabby, and our vitality extremely lowered, if not vanished. This is but the natural result of not having uniformly developed all the muscles of our spine, trunk, arms, and legs in the course of pursuing our daily labors and office activities. If you will faithfully perform your Contrology exercises regularly only four times a week for just three months as outlined in RETURN TO LIFE, you will find your body development approaching the ideal, accompanied by renewed mental vigor and spiritual enhancement. Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work. You will develop muscular power with corresponding endurance, ability to perform arduous duties, to play strenuous games, to walk, run or travel for long distances without undue body fatigue or mental strain. And this by no means is the end. Review: Exposition of Joseph Pilates' Thoughts on Health and Fitness - This is the cardinal text of Joseph Pilates innovative work, written in Joseph Pilates' words. Most of the introductory text is an exposition on the importance of employing his techniques (contrology) to create a healthier and stronger body. The rest of the book is documented with black and white photographs depicting all of the Pilates movements as modeled by Joseph Pilates. It's a very short read and may help new students approaching their own studies of Pilates, although it doesn't provide an in-depth explanation of all of the muscle groups being used. Review: Excellent resource - The book is short, succinct, and effective. Mr. Pilates put together an effective resource in this book which describes his philosophy towards fitness connected with a persons liveliness and health, and explains how this program invigorates the user. I will rather master these exercises before continuing towards what pilates has become today. I am a fit person who often does kettle bells, yoga, occasional barbell weights, and more, and I found myself cringing a few times with seemingly simple movements from this book. Tread carefully! Yet an excellent resource.

History of Joseph Pilates & original exercises
I needed this book for my Pilates teacher training. It includes history of Joseph Pilates & how he came to create contrology, currently known as pilates. It has photos & full instructions of how to complete each exercise. This book only covers the original mat exercises.

Must read for Pilates instructors and enthusiasts!
As a Pilates instructor (not classical), this is a must-read, as it enlightens on Mr. Pilates' original view for what the movement system should be. I loved reading his own words about "Controlology" and I highly recommend this to any Pilates instructor or enthusiastic to have a true appreciation for the original essence of the movements, which I find to be much more freeing that some of the variations I've learned.

Missing "The Basic Fundamentals of a Natural Physical Education"
This version is JUST the exercises without the 21 page "The Basic Fundamentals of a Natural Physical Education" essay included in the 2010 PMA edition. Also, the images in this book are drawn, not the classic photos associated with the text. I ended up ordering the 2010 version to get what I wanted.

Best version out there (unless you have the bucks for an original)
If you practice or teach Pilates this is a MUST. Some of what is taught as Pilates these days is far from it. Get back to the source, the man himself; his words, him modeling the exercises. This version of Return To Life, done by the Pilates Method Alliance, is gorgeous. It features clearer remastered photographs, it's nicely laid out and I even prefer the modern, simple font. I have two other versions of this book and bought this as a gift for someone. But it's too beautiful. I'm keeping this copy and ordering another to give away.

Storico
Ancora non mi ero procurata questo testo che è il pilastro delle origini della tecnica Pilates. Interessante scoprire come tutto è nato e cosa è rimasto delle idee iniziali.
