Review: Who the hell is Jack Carr? - Ok, I'm just a dumb Marine grunt and more qualified to eat crayons than write book reviews. That said, I was a little reluctant to read a novel written by yet another Navy SEAL turned author. I mean, shouldn't retired SEALs be opening hair salons and tanning businesses? But, I needed a new book and I took a gamble with Carr's first book, "The Terminal List". I was pleasantly surprised and adequately entertained. The character development was good and the story line written well enough to keep me turning pages. It wasn't a can't put it down read, but definitely not a book that I had to fight myself to keep reading. That lead me to "True Believer". Hey! This is getting better. Carr broke his teeth on The Terminal List and is now up and running with a really good book. I loved the history cross references and the (not so) subtle product endorsements. The plot really developed and cast of characters grew exponentially. I started seeing influences of other authors in Carr's life. Authors whose works I have devoured. Needless to say, my opinion of SEAL authors has improved and I was excited to get my Mk 1 optical sensors on his promised 3rd novel. WTF just happened? I have now finished Carr's 3rd novel, "Savage Son" and I now have a bro-crush on a Navy SEAL. I mean, we all know the the Marine Corps is the Men's Department of the Navy, but I have to step aside and hold the door for my web footed brother from another mother after reading this amazing work of fiction. Long boring hours in obscure parts of the world spent reading more books than a Marine would ever get credit for has made me a bit of a book snob. Kipling, Ken Follet, Clive Cussler, Stephen King, Louis L'Amour, Don Pendleton (if you know, you know), Eric V. Lustbader, T.E. Lawrence, and so many more have been the foundation of my reading catalog. In true SEAL fashion, Carr has escalated his writing skills quickly and is now on Parr to be elevated to the pedestal of the truly great authors or our modern time. Savage Son grabbed me in a reverse choke and held me down until I had to tap out, lest I not get enough sleep and be late for work. Not only did Carr channel so many influences of great writers in this book, it hit me on a personal level that I did not expect. The protagonist's view points clicked so close to me on so many levels, being a guy who has been to war and really appreciates solitude and the beauty of wilderness. I got to the end of the book and was pissed off. Not because of the how the book ended, now I have to wait until April 2021 for Carr's next book. You better deliver on time Carr! You hear me? Don't leave me sitting in the LZ waiting for trucks to show up (yes, in the Corps you are more likely to be picked up by three day late trucks in an LZ than helos). Carr absolutely delivered with Savage Son. If you are on the fence, man the F up and get all three of his novels. You won't be disappointed. Carr is fully operational as a fresh young novelist and it is exciting to see where he is going to take us next on our literary journey. It's a great day Carr, don't F it up! Semper Fi
