日頃絵本を読む習慣はないし、この作家のことも聞いたことがなかったが、この世界では名前のある人気作家らしい。アメリカ大西洋岸はメーン州の海辺の家。歯の生え換わる時期の娘サリーが歯が抜けたと大騒ぎ。それだけの話。だが、子どもにとっては大事件だろうし、それが子どもにとってどんなふうに感じられるかが巧みに描写されている。そのことと、父親を手伝ったり、一緒にボートで買い物に行ったりという、題にもなっているようなさりげない日常が巧みに溶け合わされ、生き生きと活写されている。なるほど達人の技というのはわかる。白黒だが、絵も楽しい。メーン州と言えば、誰もが認める自然の美しい住環境で、そのうらやましいようなわくわくするような爽快感も伝わってくる。こんな暮らしがしてみたいと思えるような一日。絵本だから英語も短いし難しくない。子供好きで感受性豊かな読者が楽しんで読むのにちょうどいいと思う。
