A: Yes. The mesh holes are very small and will safely house a variety of bugs.

**Q: What's the bottom made of? Can this get wet?**
A: I’m not sure but it’s not cardboard.  My grandson left it outside all summer and it was fine.  It’s a nice toy, although a bit pricey.
