You add cold water, scissors, a whisk or hand mixer, a spare bowl and a little skin-safe oil. How does the casting work, and how long does each stage take? Whisk the alginate into 2 litres of cold water for 60-90 seconds; cold water slows the set and keeps it lump-free. Put your hands in while it is still pink and hold 10-15 minutes. Pour the plaster, leave 4 hours, then dry 36-72 hours. What is the kit made from, and what actually touches our hands? Only the alginate touches your skin, and it washes straight off. The gypsum plaster is poured into the finished mould afterwards. Rub on a little skin-safe oil first and your hands slide out cleanly. Tested to EN71, CE and UKCA marked. I started casting my bump around 36 weeks pregnant and my son is now 6 months old. Being able to look back at what my body looked (and felt!) like has been so heartwarming and wholesome.Everything is well packaged, and you get a good amount of casting rolls for the price – more than enough to do a full bump cast. It's important to set aside some time beforehand to set up a clean station; we used a plastic dust sheet which turned out to be essential. The plaster dust WILL get everywhere.I'd make sure you're able to top up your water with some warm water as you go along as it does tend to cool quite quickly. It's generally a self-explanatory process, albeit a bit finicky to apply at time, but you get the hang of it. You do have to work quite quickly though as it does start to harden.
