Looking at buying the individual brushes alone + the knife would cost almost as much as the set. Also this gets you 1/2 of the paints you require and you can still make 4 paintings just with the colors included in the set. The quality of the brushes and knife in the set is very good, along with the paints are high quality as well. You will still need a canvas, cleaning supplies, an easel and other products, but this set is probably one of the 3 main expenses you need to get started (the other 2 being the easel and the remaining paints). The packaging and feel of this product is very good. I have painted a lot of latex and oil based painting and the brush quality of this set is high quality. I did note some complaints from reviewers stating you cannot paint one of the paintings in the DVD video, however they do provide written and visual instructions in the set on how to paint the scene using only the colors contained in the set.
